Love the circle jig. I made one myself from watching your video. I did however, cut the nail down to 1/2" and then used the circle as a template using double-sided tape to hold the item to be made into a circle on top so no nail and use the template to spin the project piece. Never have thought of this before seeing your video

@@michlee8486 that can vary greatly depending on wood material, whether the piece is indoors or outdoors, whether it’s going to get lots of traffic/handled/wear, and whether you want a penetrating finish or surface protectant finish. For a table I think some sort of poly would be fine.

I have 3 sheets of 1/2” maple glued together. and am joining it at the corner to 1 sheet of 1/2” maple (which is the seat to a bench I’m making). I’m currently planning on using dowels. Drilling down vertically through the single sheet into the ply’s of the 3 sheets glued together. Planning on gluing it together with a butt joint. Will this be stronger than the 7 jointing methods you outlined above? My intuition says it will be, but I imagine you have much more experience than I do in joinery here. I’d really appreciate any insight you’d be willing to offer. And thank you for the video! I found it useful.
@RockyRiverWoodworks3 ай бұрын
If I am understanding you correctly, you have 3 sheets that are all laminated together? And you need to attach a single sheet to that lamination at a 90-degree angle. Is that right? If you proceed how you mentioned with screwing through the single layer, into the "end-grain"/plys of the 3-sheet lamination an install dowels, I think it will be plenty strong enough for plywood.

In other vids I've seen any butt joint, including fastened with pocket screws, called a box joint. FWIW. Is pocket method stronger than butt screw? Thanks!
@RockyRiverWoodworks3 ай бұрын
I haven’t officially tested but I think they may be similar. However, the pocket screw goes in at an angle which may allow it to be slightly stronger.
@nowherewoodcraft3 ай бұрын
An important idea to note is that all pocket-holes are not the same, that is they have different degrees to the angle, and that makes a difference when working with different thicknesses and for options for orienting the pocket hole (which side), and for your concern of strength. The popular plastic Kreg jig provides a 15 degree hole. The Castle Jig (110) provides an angle of only 3 degrees. For most applications, I'll argue that the Castle hole provides a stronger joint due to its degree centering the bond in the middle of the other board as opposed to the precarious pend point of the Kreg screw. Additionally, consider the cleanliness of the edge hole (which results in less "carnage" and glue mess. This is not meant to disparage the Kreg (I have one too), but to point out options, especially since the Castle is less known to most DIYers. You can explore this option by "googling" Castle pocket hole.

Quite a lot of wasted space, with those thick verticals. If you make the frames egg-box style (half width cut, slotted together) you save a lot of space, material, and time to build. 3mm ply does the job. Personally I prefer drawers- you can see the items clearly, making choice easier. And wall space is valuable...

There are certainly times I would have found it helpful to have a wider jointer, yet there are ways to mill wider pieces with a 6” jointer. In the past, I’ve even cut them down to be 6” or narrower, done the milling, then glued them back together. More work, but work with what you have!

the dowel is especially useful and if you use two pieces of painters tape and follow another tutorial on youtube you can make super strong dowell joints in a fraction of the time it takes to do many other conventional joints for most applications in 3/8ths and up thick ply, miter joint and proper gluing is sufficient
