The Italians should absolutely have continued their attack with full charge, no matter what. That was the way Finnish cavalry worked in the 30 -years War. These Germans had shot their cannons already and they themselves had broken the ranks of their own infantry. They would have been more or less easy meat for a bold charge.

Infact the real battle of Governolo was a proper ambush, not a direct charge like this; Giovanni De Medici tactic was to avoid direct battles like this and continuing to haunt the imperials with sudden and speed attacks, as you can see at the beginning of the movie. By the way this scene and the movie are great and quite unic in modern cinema.

I was just thinking the production value Of this Is Low. Most of It went to Random armor From Different medieval eras. Then when the horses charged And got lit up by Gunpowder I noticed not one horse fell. Or not even one stunt actor fell off of a horse. The Canon balls missed too. Unless you count the One loud DING against armor and the rider sort of Leaning sideways like it hit him. They could of made this Awesome.

They used to proof armour against firearms back in the days, problem was by the time massed musketry became more popular than any other type of infantry, the 3 quarter suits fell out of favour and were replaced with the simple cuirass that will see use all the way up to ww1 in some places. The 3 quarter suits were proofed more or less like this: cuirass was proofed against muskets or arquebus, pauldrons and tassets against pistol shot, assuming they were proofed against any shot, now that depends on how much you want to pay and how much weight you're willing to carry. The later cuirass worn by Napoleonic Cuirassiers for instance were still proofed but their actual effectiveness against muskets is heavily debated by historians today, as there are many surviving examples that did their job and many that didn't, this is mostly down to metallurgy and quality control, as these were now mass produced pieces. Now this show has a fair few inaccuracies, so while yes period armour could stop musket balls, this isn't a 100% accurate representation of renaissance warfare, but it's not terrible either.

The movie as far as equipment goes is mostly accurate. I love how the Perrier cannon is depicted and how every one has munition grade armor (especially the sallet for the cavalry). I am not sure if they should have arquebus that early in late 15th century. I do think they should still be using the hand cannon.
@DefeatedRoyalist
@DefeatedRoyalist 4 жыл бұрын
Equipment wise I definitely agree! (Minus the absence of a bevor for the sallet troops.) If I recall correctly in 1503 at Cerignola the Arquebus proper played a huge role in the Spanish/imperial victory. So these late 15th century quasi hand cannon/Arquebus’ that are used in this film don’t seem too entirely far fetched. But cav shouldn’t using them yet:/

Yes, this was a time of standing armies unlike 2 centuries before when the agriculture growing seasons determined warfare schedules
@KroM234
@KroM234 3 жыл бұрын
Most of the times no, until 19th century, especially late 19th. Usually before that time campaigns would halt and troops would take winter quarters. Fighting would continue but as small skirmishes between foraging or scouting parties, small detatchments at the most. Now there was exceptions, when generals wanted to surprise the enemy by initiating a big move during the winter season, but that would be of high risk if things got out of control.
@KroM234
@KroM234 3 жыл бұрын
@@anonymousbosch9265 Seasonal warfare wasn't only tied to standing armies and agriculture. As a general, winter within a campaign was a time you could settle down your army, replan, reorganize... Any large manoeuver or operation was highly risky and dangerous during winter. Most armies wouldn't have any specific winter gear, same shoes, same clothes, maybe a blanket or two, diseases, low food very often, difficulties to forage. Winter large scale manoeuvers was always exceptions, and either a deseperate move, either a bold attempt to surprise the adversaries. Like I said, small encounters and skirmishes would often take place during winter within a campaign between foraging or scouting parties.
