GF cards 5700, 5900 and 5950 ultra already made changes that improved performance of DX9 games so those were not bad gpus..

I recently fixed up my first PC that had one of these paired with an Athlon 2600+ and 512mb of RAM, and I've been pleasantly surprised by the performance. I have it hooked up to a 1920x1200 monitor, and it's been powering through almost every 90s game I throw at it. It even ran Heroes of Might and Magic V (my favorite xp era game). It didn't do great, but it was semi playable.

I had the Ti500 when it first came out, it wasn't cheap either; but, driver support was lousy at the time, and I ended up returning it.

Interestingly, AA wasn't needed that much as it is now. In 2003 we still used CRT's a lot and those were mostly 17-19 inches. 1280x1024 on 19 inch screen is 86 ppi, which is almost the same as FHD 23 inch ppi (95). I personally had a 20 inch Diamondtron and it could do up to 2048x1536 (not many gpu could handle that, though). Also, the CRT image was somewhat sharper than the LCD, so even 1024x768 on 17-19 inches was looking really nice even with no aa at all.

I remember upgrading from a 9600XT to a X850XT back in the day...I remember being pissed when I realized the card lacked SM3.0. Something similar happened recently with my 5700XT and mesh shaders. (Alan Wake 2)

in dos you got to load cdrom driver mouse driver lol i grew up in the early days of computing also in the config and autoexec files arranging the drivers and getting them in order changes the upper memory block has to be perfect to get the right amount of memory for dos games and dos4gw i miss those times i think ill build an old dos machine and play some old golf games they were fun.

I was one of the first to get my hands on a X800XT PE. Was the envy of the all the HW forums at the time. Still one of my favorite cards of all time. Came boxed with an ATI Ruby demo CD and an awesome X800XT PE t-shirt that featured the minotaur that was used on the retail box. Wore that t-shirt until it came apart over the years. I think I still have that card laying around in a box somewhere. Great memories.

In 2003, absolute worst new card you could buy, particularly the gimped 64bit models. I remember "upgrading" from an MX440(128bit) to an FX 5200 (64bit)..... The worst part is that I sold my MX440 to put the money toward the FX5200. I was so pissed. My 64 bit variant was not labeled as 64bit, it had checkboxes on it's packaging "128bit, 64bit, 64mb, 128mb, 256mb etc" but none were checked and I wrongfully assumed that it would be 128bit like the ones I had seen in reviews etc at the time. Still gets me worked up thinking back. Never went "budget" on a GPU again.

The Nvidia FX 5500 supports DirectX 9.0a, that along with the Detonator driver version 56.64, and nGlide version 1.05 will allow you to play almost all Windows 95/98 era games in Direct3D, OpenGL, or Glide!

Definitely got to step in here and mention that those openGL results on the kyro cards look like they are halved their performance, which raises the question. As someone that owned the kyro II and frequenty ran comparisons with quake 3 and a few other opengl titles, there were a few drivers in which the kyro card had a openGL fault. Because even with the hardware at the time, i often posted results that put the openGL performance in those titles pretty much in line with the geforce 2 gts and occasionally within arms reach of the TI.

My memory of the FX5200 was reading reviews which looked okay, but then buying one and it performed so badly, I went back to my older card (Geforce 4 Ti4200). The reviewers all where given the FX 5200 Ultra or the FX 5200 128-bit, and no mention of the 64-bit even existing. This and advertising DX9 support. It the biggest GPU bait and switch I can think off. Great videos Nathan. I know your not so active anymore, but you really do a fantastic job with a wealth of knowledge. Thanks for your efforts - Paul

This is a great video! I personally have it's slightly-stronger sibling the 9800 Pro, and it was absolutely wild to play with a card that put NVIDIA *below* ATI, something that now-a-days is just a pipedream! I need to rebuild my Socket 754 machine and get that card back up and running ASAP.

The 7500 and 7500 LE were very similar. "LE" just denoted a lower GPU clock speed. Both came in a variety of different memory configurations, so some 7500 LE models actually had a 128-bit bus, and some 7500 models only had a 64-bit bus. It was pretty confusing, because AMD had basically let the board manufacturers do whatever they wanted. There definitely should have been a different product name for cards with a 64 vs. 128-bit bus! That being said, even the cheapest version of the 7500 LE was a good card for the price.

Should note, not all model 2s sound like garbage. At least not anymore! Do your Mega Drive a favor and slap an amp in it! clarification edit; the audio quality showcased in this video means almost nothing. while some model 1 systems will sound better than some model 2 systems, there are several specific revisions of each variant that fix or even ruin some features. I believe VA4 model 2s are extremely sought after for high audio quality. And by the way, "HIGH DEFINITION GRAPHICS" means absolutely nothing. Model 1 System VA0-VA6 all have that label. also the model 3 genuinely should not even be here. It's a crappy hardware clone that only happens to have a sega seal of "yeah sure i guess". I'd consider an X-Eye before that waste of PCB.

Indeed very confusing, also if you look at the Quadro cards, there was a lot going on, so many models, end of win 98 support, beginning of dual dvi, die shrinks, end of agp, first pcie cards, pcie power connector, different specs for same model per bus, first dual slot cooler, first h264 acceleration, first Nvidia sli, turbocache, last non unified shaders, curie architecture had it all, did I miss anything? 😂

I was genuinely surprised to see actual S-Video outputs on these older cards. You see official S-Video support much more often on older consoles. PC GPU’s are more rare. As not even the GT700 series had S-Video. They had DVI-D Dual Link, VGA, and HDMI.
