Sorry, you had covid. My husband has had it three times! He gets it every year, sucks to be him. I've heard a lot of people talk about build your library. What are your thoughts? One of my goals for this new school year is to be more organized. I'm definitely doing my "research" by seeing what other mamas are doing.

Oh every year sounds awful! We love BYL! I started it last year with my oldest when we were grasping at anything that might work for him. This year both of my kids are using it and loving it! I have a few videos about BYL books and resources and how we are using it. Hope that helps!

I haven't heard of this math program before. How have you been liking it? I spent much of the summer looking for a new math program for my son.

My son has only just started it but he is liking it so far.

Oooh, I think our FiveStar Flex Notebinders would work perfectly as an Interactive notebook that doesn't require gluing pages in(its one of my biggest pet peeves😂) i can just hole punch printed worksheets and fill in with the notebook paoer as needed! I might have missed it but did you mention around how much it cost to buy all the books? We don't have a very good library system in my area(KY) they do offer intrastate library loans but those can take a few months to receive and you only get the book for 2 weeks. There's also a 6 book limit which shocked me when I moved to our current county, previous counties had 10-15 book limits. I'm looking at BYL for next year but I don't think it would work out unless we bought all of the books.
@thishouseofwalls6 күн бұрын
Yeah I think those notebooks would work great! We tend to not always use full papers or like to have space to write but there are many different ways to use BYL. I haven't done a video about cost yet. In August I will have a video with the full cost of curriculum and books for both of my kids. But I did use a local used book store, Thriftbooks, Book Outlet, and Amazon (new and used) to purchase the books. I think that books could also be slowly purchased or even just borrow the audiobooks from the library if that is available. ❤️

I know all of our experiences are different. However, I'd be interested to know about how long you spend each day reading out laud. Also, do your kiddos read 1 book a day? I'm not sure exactly how much work going into all of this... but I am SUPER interested in this curriculum!
@thishouseofwalls8 күн бұрын
Reading varies with each of my kids. My 8th grader is pretty independent so we only do literature together every day. It's maybe 20 pages of a chapter book and if I can find the audio we use that. My 4th grader and I use the books and resources together. It takes a chunk of our morning but I am not actively reading aloud the entire time. And no, we definitely don't read a book a day! Each chapter book takes about 2-3 weeks and the other resources are just read as needed. I have a couple Build Your Library videos showing how I have set it up and hopefully that helps. ❤️

@thishouseofwalls that helps quite a bit! I will definitely check out your other videos! Thank you!!

I honestly can’t stand geography or science type books with drawings and prefer pictures, so the fact that the National Parks book has more photos than drawings is appealing.

I agree! There is another popular one but it's all drawings! Such a missed opportunity to show the actual beauty of these places.

If you're up for the planning this program has so much richness in it. I love that it can be a resource year after year. You aren't missing much in the guide. I did buy it before I bought the full program, and I was disappointed that there wasn't really anything in it that wasn't freely available either from their podcast or on the website.

Thank you for this list. We read some of the books that you mentioned. My son loved Hatchet and My side of the Mountain. He loved the Giver and we watched the movie as well. We read The Long Walk to Water in 5th grade and I didn't know there was a documentary. We will check that out. I made a list of the books you mentioned and hopefully we can do some this summer. We are currently read The Princess Bride, which is very enjoyable.

Great flip through! I look forward to seeing how this works for you throughout the year. I think the how-to guide is sold separately because you only need it once. You don’t need to print it with every unit. But I agree, it’s a bit odd that it’s sold separately. If you go to their “Catalog” link and look at their planner, you can see a planner page for Writer’s Workshop, which I found helpful.

I’m wondering how does BYL handle language arts specifically the book studies? Do you focus on literary terminology or just comprehension questions?
@thishouseofwallsАй бұрын
It follows a very Charlotte Mason method. The reader is the book that the kids read on their own. They sometimes will use a narration card for the book. The literature book is done as a read aloud and has vocabulary and discussion questions that are to be talked about. There is also copy work and dictation from the literature. We add in extra writing and grammar.
@reeljoymm9078Ай бұрын
Did you do the rebinding on your own? Any tips you could offer for that?
@thishouseofwallsАй бұрын
No I took it to Office Depot. I have a small binding machine but I prefer to just use it for things that I print at home. In the store they can cleanly cut the binding off for me.

I've seen a couple of reviews on Amazon saying that the paper is poorer quality for the 2024 planners, compared to previous years. I like the latest layout, but the quality of the paper would sway me to an earlier version... what's your opinion on the paper quality?
@thishouseofwallsАй бұрын
That hasn't been the case for me at all. I have written all over this planner with pens, pencils, and felt-tip pens. I think that the paper is great quality. Like last year, the felt tip leaves a little shadow but definitely doesn't bleed through. I have been really impressed with the quality!

Are you a part of a secular co-op? I don’t think my area has one :( there is a seemingly wonderful Christian co-op that I’m tempted to join but I want a secular one.
@thishouseofwallsАй бұрын
Yes, we are! There is really only 1 in our immediate area. Definitely double-check. If not, look into what makes that co-op Christian. I know some can be really faith-based while some are more relaxed. Good luck!

Hello mam, my son is in the process of changing schools, currently passed out of 2nd grade , He was bumped up to grade 2 skipping grade , the principal and teachers told us that he is doing well above his grade level , Me and my wife are are very confused now if our son should repeat 2nd grade or transition to 3 rd grade , if you could guide us if the level of education gets difficult , we are confident his roots are very strong but just dont want him under perform and lose motivation , we would really appreciate your opinion thank you , Worried parents.
@thishouseofwallsАй бұрын
Unfortunately there is no easy answer here. But I can give some advice on where to start. Each state has different laws and requirements so find what those are first. Some states have a lot more requirements while states, like mine, just need to know that you are homeschooling and that the kids are progressing. Look for Facebook homeschool groups in your area because they often have lots of information. As to where to start your student- that is completely up to you. One of the joys of homeschooling is that we can fit the school work to our children. Do some research on curriculum you all might like and that could work with your state requirements. Just about all curriculum companies will have placement tests so you can put your child on the level they need. I hope that this helps! ❤️
