Is the bank now back to where it would have been originally, secondly, would that method work out cheaper than the usual piling and finally, will that new bank withstand moored boats when it eventually becomes solid ?

Excellent work and hopefully the next work party will complete the structure with backfill and we need to look at planting the coir. Lots more to do with >400m of bank to repair.

Great work Peggy-Sue. Thank you for giving us a tour of the sack house inside. I've always wanted to have a look in here ☺️. Thank you so much for showing us around... That location would have looked amazing when the wharf was in use on the Wantage Arm of the Wilts & Berks. Cheers, Paul

not sure the lock is in full working order, looks like it's seen better days to be honest even though it's only 15 years or so old.
@wiltsberkscanaltrust
@wiltsberkscanaltrust 6 ай бұрын
Unfortunately, to keep the lock in best order the wood needed to be kept fully damp. This is done with constant use. Unfortunately the development is linked in (planning and construction) with house construction of which it's being funded by 106 funds. This has been much slower due to the economy. Therefore the lock was not connected up for use. The gates will probably need maintenance. They are still under ownership of the developers at present, as East Wichel has not yet had a handover to the Trust. The time is getting closer and we will assess the gates at that stage.

Good to see 👍 All natural watercourses are wildlife corridors so it makes sense to encourage this as much as possible. But man management can be a two edged sword. I wonder what would happen if the areas were simply left. I guess you'd get a different ecosystem, but not necessarily worse ?
@howardyardy1263
@howardyardy1263 8 ай бұрын
Left to it itself there would be less diversity - hazels and short lived trees gradually dying off as some have. Few flowers for insects and a lack of tree seedlings. The deer are grazing away most of them. By creating different light levels and spaces, the wood can regenerate. Woodland management takes place in about half of the country’s woodland. We must manage them to keep the flora and fauna that has evolved as a result of man’s management over thousands of years.

This was really interesting to see what other restoration and maintenance goes on behind the scenes on the W&B. Very important work to help with biodiversity because of the increased light after coppicing has been carried out. Thank you. Paul

I see many areas before that the channel was filled in . Full of spray paint run down report as a crime ridden place . Clean it up put the water back lots of work . Then it becomes a nice area the crime goes away . Nice people move in . Business comes to open up . Jobs are hard to get in today's world. Many benefits. It looks like a great thing to do . People want to come out to walk in the area . Now you have healthy people. That are happy .

Just as with the stoke of a pen the money can be found for nuclear bombs and new roads built, so we, as a society acting through our elected representatives, could make the stroke that provided the recourses to have this and other relics restored and maintained.

You are right about the mile marker in Swindon, pointing to Semington. In the early 70s, when I was at Swindon College, the marker was in the side of Lloyds Bank building which was being demolished to expand the Brunel Centre. I wrote to the Evening Advertiser about saving the marker, it was removed and stored for several years and returned to the other side of where the canal was. A local stone mason re-chiseled the arrow so it pointed the other way. I was very proud to have saved that stone.
