So, would you normally do that "locked" stitch at the beginning? But wanted to show the technique separately for the sake of clarity ?
@handylittleme14 күн бұрын
Yes, exactly! You would normally lock in the stitches at the sides right from the beginning of the first row. I demonstrated it separately to show how, without locking, the two layers won’t connect, which can be helpful to see. Thanks for asking, and happy knitting!

What’s the point in slipping the first stitch with the yarn in front? What does yarning over do when you just move it to the back after? I’m trying to understand why
@handylittleme15 күн бұрын
Hi there! Great questions! Slipping the first stitch with the yarn in front and then moving it to the back serves a few purposes, especially for beginners knitting a shawl. Neat Edges: Slipping the first stitch with the yarn in front creates a tidy, clean edge that’s more uniform and less bulky. This method helps the edges lay flat and gives the shawl a polished look. Yarn Over’s Role: The yarn over isn't added as an extra stitch in this case; instead, it's simply a way of positioning the yarn correctly for the next stitch. After you slip the stitch with the yarn in front, moving the yarn to the back preps you for knitting without adding a loop. This creates a decorative stripe to break up the garter stitch rows. If you’re looking for more details, the full post (link in description) explains this step in the context of shawl knitting for a smoother finish! Happy knitting, and I hope this helps clarify!

It it ends with purl, should we start with purl or knit
@handylittleme16 күн бұрын
Hi! For the double moss stitch, if your row ends with a purl, you should start the next row with a knit stitch. In double moss stitch, the stitches alternate every two rows to create the textured pattern, so switching from purl to knit (or vice versa) at the beginning of each row will keep it consistent. Hope this helps, and happy knitting!

Good afternoon from India. I want to know what ply yarn you used to knit this hat please?
@handylittleme18 күн бұрын
Hello, "ply" in yarn refers to the number of individual strands twisted together to form the yarn. Historically, ply was also used to indicate yarn thickness, but this can vary by region. In the UK, for example, "12-ply" often corresponds to a bulky or chunky weight yarn. We Are Knitters' The Petite Wool is a single-ply yarn, meaning it's composed of a single strand without additional twisting. Despite being single-ply, it falls into the bulky or chunky weight category. This classification is based on its thickness and recommended needle size, not the number of plies. The Petite Wool is 100% Peruvian wool, weighing 100 grams per skein and measuring approximately 140 meters (153 yards). It's recommended to use 8mm knitting needles or a 7mm crochet hook with this yarn. In summary, while The Petite Wool is a single-ply yarn, its bulky or chunky weight is determined by its thickness and recommended needle size, rather than the number of plies. I hope that helps!

I’m new to knitting I was wondering if this can be done on straight needles rather then circular needles
@handylittleme19 күн бұрын
Hello! Yes, the shawl can be done on straight needles; the shawl is worked back and forth on the needles - knit flat. I personally use circular needles because the longer cable provides extra space, making it easier to manage the larger number of stitches. Happy Knitting!

It is beautiful but at which row do we cast off after the desired length is done
@handylittleme21 күн бұрын
Thank you! The feather and fan stitch really does create a beautiful pattern. Once you've reached your desired length, you can cast off on the next row following the pattern. Just complete the row you’re on and then work the cast-off in the pattern. This means if you’re on a knit row, cast off in knit stitches, or if you’re on a purl row, cast off in purl stitches. This will help keep the edge neat and consistent with the pattern. Happy knitting! Let me know if you have any more questions. 😊
@marieking433021 күн бұрын
Can you explain to me the part about the neck section while knitting the back section of this pattern? Specifically the part after you cast off the 29 center sittches? I'm not sure what "cast off 1st(?stitch) for the neck at the beginning of the next two rows from the neck?"
@handylittleme21 күн бұрын
Certainly! The neck shaping in the pattern can be a little tricky, but here’s how it works step-by-step: After you cast off the center 29 stitches for the neck, you’ll have stitches left on either side of those cast-off stitches. You’ll work each side of the neck separately, and here’s what the instruction means: Cast off 1 stitch at the neck edge on each side: After you've cast off the center stitches, you’ll have two sections of stitches on either side of the neck opening. Starting with one side, you’ll cast off 1 stitch at the beginning of the next row. This cast-off is done at the neck edge (the side closest to where you just cast off those center stitches). Repeat for the other side: Once you’ve finished casting off on one side, you’ll do the same for the other side to shape the other edge of the neck. So, in essence: Work one side, casting off 1 stitch at the neck edge at the beginning of the row. Then switch to the other side, casting off 1 stitch at the neck edge at the beginning of the row. This shaping creates a gradual slope for the neckline on each side of the back. Let me know if you have further questions on this part!

Hi, Thank you for the video and the pattern. I am knitting this headband, but not sure if Row 3 should end with knit or knit below? I needed to rework, but again, one of the edges got longer than the other. One is neat and parallel, while the other edge started to have a curved shape. Should I reknit the edge stitches?
@handylittleme21 күн бұрын
Hi! 😊 Thank you for watching! For Row 3, you should follow the specific instructions for that row, but it sounds like the stitch at the end may need attention. If one edge is becoming longer or curved, it could be due to tension or possibly an extra stitch sneaking in on that side. Double-check that each row ends as specified (either with a knit or knit below as stated in the pattern) to keep both edges even. If the edges are still uneven, you might want to try reworking the edge stitches, ensuring consistent tension throughout. Also, sometimes adding a selvedge stitch (knitting the first or last stitch of every row) can help maintain a neat edge. Let me know if this helps, and happy knitting! 🧶✨

When I yarn over I end up with a hole
@handylittleme24 күн бұрын
Hi there! A yarn over does create a small hole on purpose. For the corner-to-corner dishcloth, if you see holes where they’re not intended, it could be that an extra YO is sneaking in by mistake. If the yarn accidentally loops over the needle, it creates a yarn over without you realizing it. You can also check out the written pattern here: www.handylittleme.com/diagonal-knit-dishcloth-pattern/. I hope this helps. Happy knitting!

@janeeleanor484926 күн бұрын
doesn't this mess up the row count? Also can you show what the piece looks like when done this way for several rows?
@handylittleme26 күн бұрын
The purl one below method does not change the row count, but it does alter the stitch structure slightly. By purling into the stitch below, you’re essentially pulling up the stitch from the previous row, which creates a tuck and a bit more texture, but it doesn’t add or remove stitches. However, it can sometimes create a looser fabric or a different tension, especially if done repeatedly. This is because the stitch length will be slightly different due to the extra yarn involved in pulling from the row below. But if you’re following a pattern that uses this technique, it should balance out across rows without changing the row or stitch count.
