You explained more proficiently in the first 4 minutes the major/basic use of this pedal that many others failed to communicate in 10 or 20 minutes. Absolutely brilliant instructions

Everything we do is based on what we’ve taken in in our lives. You cannot write a book or make a movie without using tropes literary devices and themes that you’ve been introduced to through other peoples work. These are the building blocks the very language that you use to create.

Simple. I had shit gear as a kid, never got feedback, never had any sustain whatsoever, I might as well have been playing banjo. It was so frustrating, I didn't know what I was doing wrong. Fuck everyone who says hear doesn't matter.

It's hard to get the same sound as another guy. People are doing it to learn and because it's a challenge mostly and not because they really just want to sound like X guitarist. Sounding like someone else for a moment and learning why they have the sound they do is valuable experience. I don't think anyone plans on KEEPING the sound they stole for a moment LOL.

MT-2!!!!! Does it sound good through the effects loop like Ola Englund says it does? Pat o Brien used it in early 00’s cannibal corpse I guess? It kinda wails imo

It depends on the amp, the Hiwatt doesn’t have a loop but the mid range of the Hiwatt really makes it sound awesome. metal zone rules!

I believe Gilmour said in an interview that his advice for new players would be to not try and be too original right off the bat. He himself would often try to replicate the sounds of Hank Marvin for example.

Lol. Um, this does not apply to me. I’m currently using my 13 cable method. My preamp is inside of the loop of my gate. When I use my tuner to mute, its dead silent no matter what effects are on. And especially with as much gain as I use

They don't get it. 99.9% of guitarist on the planet have someone else sounds. 1. Many people have great sound worth recreating. 2. There are not enough amps and stuff on the planet for everyone to create their own sound.

I wanted to sound like DiMartini and Van Halen and Lynch. Who doesn't want to sound like that. I'm sure there are players that aren't into that but that's the standard whether you want to admit it or not. You have Steve Lukather and Michael Landau. You have the lab guys that perfected studio tone. After buying at least $100k in gear and being a tone chaser for 35 years I found my sound in my head. It's a mix of all he great players since Angus Young and Brian May and Jimi Page and Jimi Hendrix. Tony Iommi and Randy Rhoads. Van Halen, DiMartini, and Lynch. Adam Jones. Stevie Ray Vaughan. I've been influenced by all of these guys but I don't sound like them. I don't use any of the gear these guys used. A Marshall and a Tube Screamer and a Delay Unit is what I use. JB pickup. The sound is in my head and my body and my fingers. With a good overdriven sound that's pretty generic I can get my sound because it's me. Once you discover that you're done. Your sound is you not your gear. It's mostly in your head how you imagine you want to sound and in your ear or your ability to get your gear to make the sound in your head. Learning what it takes to get that sound in your head is the exhausting process of tone chasing. Stop chasing the other guys sound and chase the sound in your head.

Not a shredder but I too have a Paul Gilbert phase. Still have the JHS PG-14 pedal on my board! I use it as a pseudo-fuzz that can be tamed with the volume knob. Arielle uses Marshall more than anything else but funny enough she’s the one that got me into appreciating Fender tube amps. My chorus is a DC-2W because Prince. I love a G12H30 style speaker because of Brian May. There’s a difference between learning from the greats and taking what works for you and worshipping a guitar player like a god and constantly swapping amps and gear because “it doesn’t sound right.” When you’re chasing the dragon trying to sound EXACTLY like your guitar hero, you’ve lost the plot. Take the pieces but like you said, create your own story!
@Ottophil

I never chased other peoples sound. I also am not trying to be unique. I want to sound as generic as possible. I play 3 hour gigs all over the map genre wise, i don’t even try to match any of those tones.

We have too much information and we experiment so little while having a lot of cool gear companies putting stuff together and most people are still relying on edge-of-the-breakup blues tones with overdrive and compressor. We need bands like Idles or Fountaines DC with an unorthodox approach to gear. Another cool example is Code Orange mentioning Ableton as an instrument of creativity itself, during the writing of Underneath .
@DannyUnderwood

well said. Definitely agreed on the Ableton thing, unbelievable tool. Once the workflow clicked for me I found myself actually completing songs. It's so good for just getting things down and moving.

On the subject of trying to copy sounds, when i first started really diving deep into gear and playing, I'll never forget trying to sound like Joe Satriani. I bought a JS100, his signature vox pedals, and a couple other effects he used. Plugged in, and it sounded like crap. I was devastated and didn't know what to do. Guess what i plugged into? My 10 watt Crate amp 😂 Pretty silly that 15 year old me just assumed the effects and guitar mattered more than an amo because "They all have speakers, how different can those be?"

100% did the same thing! Peavey Rage 158! There's so many lessons to learn from trying to emulate their tones, which is why I find it kinda weird when people say you shouldn't try to copy someone. I feel like that same person will tell you "tone is in the fingers" - then the gear shouldn't matter then right?!?!

After a ton of trial and error and soul searching and crowd following and shame changing and defiant opposition to reason, my mod pedal order is Univibe/Phaser/Flanger before drives, Chorus after drives and preferably in the FX loop. I need it to be SO CLEEN. I also put my trem between my delay and reverb to be contrarian.
