Hummingbirds have VERY long tongues that can easily reach the nectar at the bottom, no need for the glass beads.

Thank you. However...you completely missed the point. The glass beads merely displace some of the volume. It reduces by 50 percent the wasting of nectar when we empty and refill twice each week.

We have received a few comments or questions on our Facebook 'Garden San Diego' page asking why we seek to prevent the bees from coming to our feeders. While we appreciate your interest, the answer was seemingly obvious to us, and clearly explained in the video. At the 3:30 point in the video you will see footage of bees covering one of our large 32 oz. feeders before it was bee-proofed as shown in the video. Bees swarmed all our other feeders, too. We have as many as 15. They are located just steps outside the sliding glass doors leading to our two patios. Some feeders are just outside our front door. At times it was difficult to come and go. Hummingbirds will not come to a feeder that is covered with bees. Thankfully, our bee invasions last only about two weeks twice each summer: July and again in September or October. There are gazillions of flowering plants in our condo complex in the Eastlake neighborhood of Chula Vista, California. Bees can find plenty of pollen and nectar at these. We also see hummers at these plants, including our own. Bees are an essential part of earth’s ecology. But we simply cannot have thousands swarming just outside our doors or covering our feeders. Your comments relating to this are being deleted to avoid embarrassment to you. Thank you!

Our home is in Chula Vista, California, suburban San Diego. We have two invasions of bees during the summer. No wasps. Our first comes in mid July for about two weeks. Then they stop coming. We are bee free for about six weeks. Then the second wave comes. It lasts two weeks. I don’t know why this happens.
@petem6503

An alternative that works for me: instead of 4:1 water:sugar, dilute the mix. Somewhere between 4.5:1 and 5:1, the bees stop coming, but the hummers still show up.
@davidpearling2395
@davidpearling2395 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your idea. In our case, and just like last summer, our bees simply stopped coming. They began coming in large numbers in mid-July and stopped coming a few weeks later. Early last fall we had a second bee invasion. It was as bad as the first. It stopped week or so later. We have not had a second invasion yet this year. But it's early. So...for the time being we will stick with the 4:1 ratio. But I will keep your diluted recipe on file. And stay tuned! We are producing a new video about bee-proofing. We got the idea from another of my viewers, Bill Manders.

I believe he's using HummZinger guards. I just checked Amazon and they sell four for over $25 (that's assuming you have Prime. IDK how much they charge for shipping). Based on the Q&A I read on their listing, as well as the reviews, the manufacturer blames the customer when anything breaks or doesn't work properly. I read other reviews and by the way they make it sound, you need to be a rocket surgeon to install them (haha). I'm going to continue searching for a solution but if you try these, I hope you'll post an update! Good luck!

@@davidpearling2395 there must be multiple listings for the same brand/ style. The price you paid is fair. I can't justify spending $25 on something I'm not sure will work, based on other reviews. If they work like they do for you, though, they're well worth the cost!😊

@@lizjoe21750 The bee guards were only partially effective this summer. The bees seemed more determined. I saw some poking their heads into the ports in spite of the bee guards. This slow-motion look is very cool!! But I was watching another of your videos about nano bee guards and you also had a 32 oz. feeder covered with bees that you said guards won't work on. Those feeders are the kind I use, and I have 6 of them with hundreds of hummers. I need the big ones, so I don't have to fill them as often because of so many hummers. They were just like your feeder was covered with bees and was running my hummers away. I came up with an easy fix to this problem and still use the same feeders but no bees at all!! If you would be interested in my solution just let me know and also how I can let you know! Thought you may want to share this info with the folks online.

We have been using the minty spray repellent as needed. It works for only a short time, just a few minutes. Unfortunately the bees returned recently and are not deterred by the bee guards now. But we found that if we do not fill the feeders to the top and are careful that no nectar runs down the side the bees stay away, but not completely. The hummers can reach the nectar with their tongues but apparently the bees can’t. We added two bee traps as a “final solution” (literally). It kills the bees. We don’t like that but we can’t have bees swarming our front porch or our patio. The traps have to be emptied of dozens of dead bees every night. We flush them. I refill the traps every night with about 5 oz. the same nectar we give to our hummers. Last year the bees stopped coming on their own. We hope they stop coming this year. Please tell me your ideas.

@@davidpearling2395 What I did on my First Nature 32oz.Hummingbird feeders to bee proof them was simple. The holes in the feeder are fairly large holes and are not round but oblong. I found some plastic drinking straws that are small straws but will fit perfectly inside the holes of the feeders. I take the feeders apart, clean then well and make sure they are dry. Then I stuck the straw into the hole until it is flush or just barely sticking out on the inside of the feeder. Then I used a hot glue gun on the outside where the little fake flower is to glue all around the straw. Then when cool I cut the straw off leaving about 3/16 inch sticking out of the fake flower. Everybody online says you have to have a small hole so the bee can't get in, but the hummers can, but this is not accurate in my findings. With the straw being this long and still fairly large opening the hummers stick the bill down into the straw lap the sugar water and can pull their bill out without dripping it on the feeder. The bees come, can't reach this far into the feeder to reach the sugar water plus no drippings around the holes and they go back to the hive and spread word this food source is gone. I have so many hummers it looks like a swarm of bees but not one real bee has been back for weeks now since I did my feeders this way!! Each feeder has 10 holes and now has 10 little straws 3/16-inch-tall sticking out of each hole. It took my birds about a half hour to get use to this change and as of right now I have 6 feeders full of Hummers and no bees and a few weeks ago they were covered with bees and running off the birds!! I would show you a picture if this was email but I don't think I can add a pic here on this comment text. But I think I explained what I did so you can have a good idea, but if you have questions I will be glad to try to answer ! Let me know what you think ! Thanks!

@@billmanders2709 Thank you! We love our hummers, don’t we? I would like to see a photo. I would give you my email address except there’s been someone who uses the handle “Rigatony” trolling my KZbin channel. I think I know who he is. If I am correct, that creep has been compared to “cockroach in a gas station urinal” by columnist John Kass. If you would like, send me a private message on Facebook, or Twitter, or LinkedIn. We can discretely exchange email addresses there, and photos. Curiously, bees have NOT been on my large red feeders this year. But they have been on my others. Keeping the nectar level lower on those and making certain that no nectar drips down the side appears to be working. We also bought some citronella plants and candles for our back patio. We’ve only had those for two days and they seem to be working. So far, my combined strategies are keeping the bees off our feeders almost 100%. Try connecting with me, please.

Thank you. Yours is a good idea. We are careful to not have nectar running down the outsides of our feeders, too. But during heavy bee times the bees are strongly attracted to the feeding ports. That is where the mint spray helps. It doesn’t harm the bees and our hummers are not bothered by it.

An important reminder to remain open-minded and get more information on your own - and from authoritative sources - so you can reach your own conclusions on climate change. Public dialog and debate should allow for a robust exchange of perspectives, as in this video, and for calm and reasoned exchange of vetted data. The video also makes a good point about bike lanes: their use and utility is pretty marginal in all metro regions. Bike trips as a percent of daily commute trips is usually about 2 or 3 percent at best, and even less as a percent of all trips. I still think there's a place for regional bike path systems and it is a good form of exercise obviously. But don't carve bike lanes out of streets.
