I am new to your channel , recommended by KZbin. I am a self thought come back trumpet player. Excellent video quality and advice. Question, how do i slur that fast between G and C? Is it the softnest , aperture control or the tongue?
@VictorHaskins8 күн бұрын
@@da11king I am glad you dig the video. To answer your question, you do anything fast by doing it slow and controlled first. Everything is about airflow and connecting the various parts of the airflow system (lungs, throat, tongue, lips, brain) in a manner that they can do what you are imagining. Work on doing your slur slowly and smoothly and controlled with a metronome and then go faster when you are comfortable and consistent and the slower tempi. You have to figure out how it feels to direct the air-I think there may be a video I’ve made on my channel about slurring? Take a look in the playlist “tips for brass players” or something like that.

Excellent video! Hey, I'm a saxophone player and I want to get a cornet or a flugelhorn (not trumpet)> Which of THOSE two do you think is most versatile? Based on your opening remarks regarding the Cornet, my guess is that you say "cornet." Thanks! Keep swinging!
@VictorHaskins17 күн бұрын
@@JeffreySaxophoneTallNewton You would be correct! Definitely more flexibility resides with the cornet. Cheers!

@@VictorHaskins I see some "long cornets" ... and some with triggers ... Any thoughts on this? I like vintage, looking at restored / relaq'd King Silver Sonics. I'd NEVER buy a relac'd saxophone, but apparently that's actually a good thing with brass...
@VictorHaskins17 күн бұрын
@@JeffreySaxophoneTallNewton getting a “long” cornet vs a standard one will be a matter of preference-you should try it and compare it to standard models, if possible. Triggers are an alternative to throws-they don’t affect the sound and are a matter of whether you like to push or pull when adjusting tuning on the fly (aka moving the 1st and/or 3rd valve slides)
@VictorHaskins17 күн бұрын
@ raw brass is a nice look/sound. lacquer and plating affect the resonance of a horn, so it would be worth trying horns with dif finishes to see what you like. Obviously, only a raw horn will give you the patina over time.
@JeffreySaxophoneTallNewton17 күн бұрын
@@VictorHaskins I'm going to NAMM, so I'll try some there! Doubt they have any long ones though, no vintage of course. So don't pass on a horn with no trigger?

Ok trumpet peoples. My kid is 7th grade playing trumpet. He needs a lyre. When I was in school I remember all the trumpets having the lyre attached to the third valve slide. But he says it can't be attached there because then he wouldn't be able to use the slide. Is this really the case? How did my entire trumpet section survive while having a lyre attached to the third valve slide instead of the pinky hole attached?
@VictorHaskins4 ай бұрын
@@koppolaholland9949 it depends on how the horn is made. For instance, the cornet I play has a fixed ring on my third valve slide. You can always get a lyre that clips onto the bell if there is no adjustable/removable ring on your 3rd valve slide. (The value of having a fixed third valve slide ring is that you don’t get that occasional situation where you go to engage the slide and it slides out of the socket because the screw has become loose). I hope that helps.

Buzzing the mouthpiece can be a good exercise for learning and improving lip and pitch control. But when you actually play the instrument DON'T try to 'force' your lips to buzz. Adjust your lips similar to how you buzz the mpc, and just blow into the mpc - the acoustical physics of the instrument will MAKE your lips vibrate! It your job to adjust your lips to make the best sound at the correct pitch. If you do 'force' a buzz into the mpc, the sound will also be 'buzzy'.

I haven't been on the proverbial mpc safari, but I have been interested in branching out from Bach pieces, of which I have a 3c, 5c, and 7c. They all sound thin in the upper register and all the pedal Cs were flat. About two years ago I decided I don't like the bite on Bach pieces. Too sharp. I tried an ACB TA1, which has a C cup with a V throat entrance and I love the sound. The rim is pretty flat and the bite is much gentler than the Bachs. I can hit pedal Cs on it sporadically. The upper register is flat, though. Last week I decided to check out the local Sam Ash clearance sale and found a Denis Wick 1 1/4 c American classic in a loose bin. The pedal Cs just pop out. The upper register is in tune. The rim is the most comfortable of the pieces I have. I'm not interested in screaming. I want a fat or mellow working register up to high c or d. I also need to improve endurance. Love your solo on Cherokee, BTW.

Great explanation! Thank you! I see people kicking it out in higher ranges as well. Are there higher range notes that are inherently sharp as well?
@VictorHaskins11 ай бұрын
You are welcome! Well, there are notes that are inherently sharp depending on how your horn is built and how your embouchure might interface with the trumpet. When you get high enough on the horn, the partials get closer together and you have more options for alternate fingers, so if you notice you are playing C above the staff and that is sharp at a particular time, you might do better to finger it as first valve instead of open and kick out tuning slide 1 to bring the pitch down.
@JamesThomas-dn6hz11 ай бұрын
@@VictorHaskins that makes sense. So I'll have to work with a tuner to find my specifics. Thanks again!
@VictorHaskins11 ай бұрын
@@JamesThomas-dn6hz you are welcome-one final tip: use your ears, not a tuner! The best way to work on intonation is to try to match a drone-that way you will develop your ability to hear where you need to put the note vs relying on your eyes (since you wouldn’t/shouldn’t be using a tuner during a performance-you gotta be listening and tuning to what’s around you). You can experience an example of this on my guided practice series on long tones here on KZbin. Good luck, and happy practicing!

I have had to "lap" in a slide from time to time with talcum paste to get it to go smooth. The first thing you need to do is de-grease the slide inside and out with a de-greaser to get the slide grease off, then try it with oil. Usually they are coated with grease and gummy. I have had better luck with silver plated slide tubes getting them to move smooth faster. On a couple of pre-1930's horns, I had to polish the inside tube, then plate the slide tube with silver and then lap them in to get sealed good and smooth running. Sounds like a lot of work but a REALLY nice result on my Holton jazz hound and my 00 horn.
