I do this with my mom, its because talking to a parent can be like a minefield (at least in my case) because everything i say can and most likely will either be used against me or turned into a "life lesson" which only stresses me out. Their is no point in prolonging an interaction that i dont gain anything from and only ups the chances of me getting yelled at for reasons i dont get, trust me as a teen when i say this is your teenager trying to stop or prevent a most likely stressful conversation by giving short answers since they cant just tell you to stop.
