@@robertcunningham1944 That has nothing to do with budget, but with an architect thinking with a car brain . The bridge has already a concrete barrier to protect pedestrians. Your camera work is excellent! I love being able to see and hear the beautiful, talented actress who played Ramona. I hope she becomes as famous and beloved as the young actress who starred in this play in 1959. It was the first starring role for actress Jo Raquel Tejada... better known as Raquel Welch! (RIP). Poor Alessandro! He was no horse thief, he was out of his mind with grief after the death of their precious baby daughter. The novel, Ramona, was inspired by several actual incidents, particularly the murder of an Indian by a white rancher in March, 1883. Juan Diego, a Cahuilla Indian, lived with his wife and small child near the Cahuilla Indian Reservation in the San Jacinto Mountains. In 2003, I followed Helen Hunt Jackson's description and directions in her book and found the valley where Alessandro and Ramona moved, hoping to escape their oppressors. It's up on the North-facing side of Mt. San Jacinto just the way she described it. When I saw the ancient oak trees at Twin Pines rd. it looked exactly as she described it, so I turned and explored the area. I found a maze of dirt roads where a few people lived, and knew I wanted to live there too. I kept coming back up here until I found property I could afford. I bought a 20 acre property with surveyed building pad ready for a house, and the water meter already installed. I only paid $15,000 cash for the property, but it's cheap for a reason. The electricity from the grid is too far away. I spent $28,000 on a 9kw off-grid solar/wind/battery/inverter system, and it has provided all our electricity for 18 years now. I live without a lot of conveniences I had when I lived in "civilization", but I always find a way to make it work. I may be poor, but I have something no billionaire has ever "owned"... I have ENOUGH, and I have gratitude. The Cahuilla tribe still lives nearby, but mostly they avoid the mountain because many believe it's cursed, and they may be right. They have legends about the demon, Tahquitz, who lives in a cave near the peak and eats humans (according to legend). I've heard the sound that is attributed to Tahquitz; an eerie low "growl" that seems to emanate from underground, as if the mountain itself is moaning. I don't know what causes the somewhat subsonic noise that one can feel deep in the bones; maybe seismic, maybe wind-related, but it is unnerving to feel and hear that sound. People who live here do seem to encounter great tragedies, so much so that I call this valley "The land of broken dreams". "Que es la vida!" Only an insane person would want to live here. Maybe that's why I feel at home here and why I love this place.😉

Thank you very much for your compliments about my camera work. Like you, I had wanted to see this play for years, in fact, almost 50 years in my case, but it never worked out for me, that is, until this year. I was very glad to be able to attend, along with some of my friends. With 20 acres, you don't sound poor to me. While you may not have a lot of cash, you're definitely rich when it comes to living independently, and off the grid. Take care, I hope you get the chance to see it someday.

Thank you for posting this! I'm happy to know that the Ramona play is still going. I really want to see it, but haven't had the chance even though I only live @ 35 miles from the Ramona Bowl. Way back in the 1970s, when I was a teenager living in Texas, I found a first edition of the novel, "Ramona" and read it. I loved it so much I became a bit obsessed with the characters and the California sites that were described in the book. I visited California as a child in 1972, and have loved the state and it's gorgeous wild places ever since. In 2001, I left Texas and moved to S. California to escape a very dangerous situation that lead to my father's murder. Before my dad was shot and killed by a madman, he suggested I change my name and move to California, and that's exactly what I did. I moved just West of Banning, and I started recognizing names such as "Alessandro" and "Ramona" everywhere. I re-read the book, and realized that the last place that Ramona and Alessandro lived in the story was up on Mt. San Jacinto, not far from me. The author, Helen Hunt Jackson gave such clear directions to the location, I followed them and easily found that wide valley with ancient oak trees that she described. I fell in love with that location, kept coming back to spend time there until I found a forgotten property for sale. The owners let me buy it for $15,000 cash, and it already had a water meter installed and a building pad, surveyed and ready for a house. Long story, but I have lived off-grid on this 20 acre property for 18 years now, and I love this place so much, I feel like I belong here. Yes, I know that the Ramona story is fiction, but the author researched all the locations by spending time at various ranches and reading copious amounts of true newspaper stories that she wove into her book. The locations are real, and the characters are based on real people. The area where I live was a huge ranch back in the late 19th century, when Helen Hunt Jackson visited the "Pass" area. I read a biographical book about her that confirms that she spent time here as she wrote her famous book. I feel a special kinship to a minor character in the book, I don't know if her character is portrayed in the play, but if she is, I may try to audition to be "Aunt Ri" in the future. I talk just like her, so I won't have to "fake" the Southern accent! 😂Sorry, I know that no one cares to read my life story, but "Ramona" has held a place in my heart since I was a child and if I had never read that book, I wouldn't have found the wonderful place that I've called home for 18 years. Thank you for posting this video. Those horses are extremely well-trained! I rehomed my horse years ago after he threw me, scared by a gunshot from over a mile away. I figure my bones are too fragile at my age to risk death like that, so I found a good home for "Sancho".☺

I wouldn't be the thoughtful, and mature man I am today without hearing the shows Roy's played on his radio program. Roy has served as a father figure for me in many ways ever since I moved to Los Angeles in 2002 and was living in my van. When I couldn't sleep one night I tuned in by chance to KPFK (but is anything really by chance? no, I don't think so.) and found Roy playing an Alan Watts talk. I was simply blown away by the profundity of this man along with his humor about things he was discussing. I became an instant loyal KPFK listener, and a member not long after that, once I was working steadily. Roy's show is the reason a great many people became KPFK members and enthusiasts and he will be greatly missed by countless numbers of people all over the world who regularly tuned into his show. God bless his beautiful soul, and may peace be with his partner, Diane. My heart goes out to her, and I send her and Roy's enduring spirit much love and peace. It's the end of an era. And I pray I can get Diane's cooperation in creating a documentation of this era with a film about Roy called "Something's Happening: The Roy of Hollywood Story.". May God bless Diane and us all. Driving through deserted late night streets of LA and hearing Roy intro Alan Watts was always a thrill. If I'd just said goodbye to some friends in another car, I'd honk, roll my window and shout, "Turn on 90.7! It's Alan Watts!" This was before the internet so hearing Alan was a rare and special thing. In this often lonely, odd city, Roy felt like an old friend. HIs voice and that hokey intro ("Look! Up in the sky...a bird...a plane...It's Roy of Hollywood!") triggered waves of serotonin in me. Oooof such beautiful memories. I'll miss Roy and always grateful to him for opening me up to Alan and the many who came after.

Dearest Diane, may peace be with you, beautiful soul. Thank you for your comment. I was hoping to find a way of communicating with you. I've been away and just tuned in tonight at midnight for spirituality night and Alan Watts only to learn of Roy's passing. From my perspective, Roy was the very heart of KPFK in and I don't know how they'll get along without him. It's the end of an era. I don't know if you remember me or not, but several years ago while volunteering at KPFK during a fund drive I had the chance to tell Roy in person that I wouldn't be the man I am today without my listening to the shows he played on Something's Happening. This is a simple fact. I would not be the mature, responsible man I am today without listening to all the helpful shows Roy played from people like Alan Watts, J. Krishnamurti, Jack Gariss and Pema Chodron, to name jst a few. I profoundly loved Roy like a father and will miss him and his on air presence terribly, like so many others who listened to his show. Roy was the one who inspired me to run for the KPFK Board of Directors about 10 years ago too. I'm an introvert so this took a lot of courage on my part to stand up and do public speaking. Yet I did it to make Roy proud of me and to do my best to be of service to KPFK. I'm an indie filmmaker now and I was hoping to do a documentary film about Roy to celebrate his 50 years on the air. I'm wondering if you would be willing to help me to create this using photos and by interviewing you and others at the station like Alan Minsky and anyone else who might be willing to talk about Roy and their experiences with him. This would be a way offering a lasting audio-visual record for all his fans to appreciate and for people in the future to understand the enormous depth of his contribution and dedication to KPFK. It would leave behind a lasting record on film so people will never forget the crucial role he played in holding the station together and helping so many people with his wonderfully inspired, thought provoking and deeply introspective programming. I was a volunteer as Nita Vallens call screener for a year or so about a decade ago when I was in film school and know how Roy helped Nita get her position at KPFK and how close they were. I hope to interview her as well, of course for the film. Please let me know if I could work with you to get some photographs to use in the documentary as well as any video or film footage you may have which could be incorporated into this feature film documentary, which I plan to make anywhere from 90 min to 2 hrs long. I also hope to Interview Gary Null and others whose shows he played regularly too. I hope I will have your cooperation and blessing in this endeavor, or I simply won't make it. Please know that it's my intention to create a documentary film that is deeply reverent and respectful and you can be the first one to watch it when it's completed. Anything you may not care for will be edited out, and anything you want to be added in, we will absolutely do so. Indeed, I think it would be appropriate for you to be the executive producer on this film and receive this credit on screen as well as me interviewing you for the film. We could cooperate together on it. It will cost you nothing though. I'm not looking for money from you to make this film it will come out of my own pocket and I will give my time to it freely and passionately, if you will agree to my creating this lasting record of Roy's time at Pacifica Radio. Any proceeds coming from this film would go directly to you as well for your retirement. I want nothing financially from the creation of this. I only wish to be of service in creating something truly memorable about Roy for you, myself and for all who loved Roy. I've also worked with Buzz at past KPFK events and worked his camera for him, so I also hope to enlist his cooperation with this endeavor too, by the way. Thank you for your kind consideration in tis matter. I am saying a prayer for you and your peace of mind. If there is anything I can do for you please get in touch and let me know how I may be of service. I'm completely at your disposal. I loved Roy a great deal, but I'm sure what I felt for him is nothing compared to you and how close the two of you were. You have my deepest condolences. God bless you, sweet Lady Di.. I hpe to hear back from you here in this comment soon. Be well. -Seth 🙏
