The Tueller drill as practiced by an experienced knife handler in academy videos, drew and deployed a folding knife from concealment as they were closing, on trainee officers who were only prompted to simulate a room check scenario. Brandishing a visible blade alters factors significantly... without those cues, just getting off-line and drawing might be suboptimal.

That's why your gun cannot and should not be your crutch. You should know how to handle yourself without a weapon, footwork skills and basic combat skills, which would give you a few more seconds of time to more effectively use your gun.

As a former Leo firearms instructor you are one of the few people that understands what Tueller was showing by his example of moving and not standing still during deadly force or the distance an attacker can cover and make contact with you. Excellent job…

Situational awareness is the key, that and entirely avoiding getting into the situation. My main concern had been when traveling, placing myself on high alert when stopping for gas or at rest areas. Since we're older now I tend to avoid driving at night so there is that reduction also. Still I see people at gas stations completely unaware of any thing, totally engrossed in their phone.

The biggest lesson from Tueller's research is to NOT just stand there, draw, shoot, and count on your wimpy little pistol bullets to keep you safe. Move, parry, attack... do all of the other "in a fight" stuff that you would do if you didn't have a gun, and then add the element of the gun.

“If you shoot an attacker more than 21 feet away from you, then you will spend the rest of your life in prison, but if you shoot an attacker within 21 feet in front of you…then you will spend the rest of your life in prison. The world is becoming more sympathetic toward people who will decide to take your life, and when they do either your life is over, or both of your lives are over. The only difference is you’ll be in a cell and they’ll be in the morgue.” -My CCW instructor

Dennis set this up for cops and duty rigs. You need MORE space time when your draw is from a concealed belt rig, or you need to have a pocket rig and have your hand ON your gun, in the pocket, in a firing grip.

The idea that "good guys" are the people who have guns is nonsense. Almost nobody ever uses a gun to protect themselves. Doesn't happen. People commit suicide with guns, accidentally shoot innocent bystanders with guns, commit murder with guns. They don't "shoot bad guys". They don't actually protect themselves. The gun industry has frightened a bunch of rubes into thinking guns create safety. They don't. It's a fantasy.

Add lateral movement to the exercise. You can't outrun them backwards, and you're more likely to trip and fall if you try. Move laterally and make them chase you in a circle, always angling to the side of their trajectory and looking for obstacles to put between you. They can't chase you as fast and you'll get your hits before they get theirs.
@cgsimons1187

Correct. In this case moving towards the tree could enable the defender to potentially put that between himself and the attacker.

@@user-ci2mn1oy3w Correct. I get it. I just can't recall one incident ( in the streets) where it applied. Typically people fire not based on this rule but because they just want to, regardless of threat distance. Officer Jason Van Dyke's counsel tried to sell rule but it was found non applicable.

But it is hilarious that police with drawn pistols will use this as justification for shooting someone with a knife. The whole point of the Tueller drill is the need to draw first. If you have already drawn your weapon, the 21 foot "rule" has no validity. Conversely, if your weapon isn't in a duty rig and harder to draw, the rule likewise has no validity.

I was taught years ago to quickly retreat circling while drawing my weapon. Adds time and distance to my advantage while also increases the possibility of the attacker stumbling over their own feet.

Best way to defeat this is to fall back or side on the ground … He has to stop or at least slow down as it will confuse the hell out of the attacker … that buys time to draw and fire … the other thing about this drill is they always show the attacker standing still exhibiting his weapon … you better be drawing do not give him the first move ….
