I appreciate the informative video. Why on a Surly Ogre that has a Rohloff setup with fenders would a flat repair involve removing the fenders as well? I've come across this on a bicycle touring video.

Yes, it takes good geometry skills or trial and error. If the ramp is at too sharp an angle where it meets the tailgate or the ground, one end or the other, front or back, of the trike will scrape the ground. Or the middle of the trike will hang up on the lip of the tailgate. The ramp must be long enough for this. I wound up with telescoping aluminum ramps, pricey but lightweight, convenient, do the job perfectly. Eight feet extended, four and a half collapsed, but your trike and vehicle may be of different dimensions. I use a little colored tape on my tailgate to mark the exact centerline for the ramps, so when setting up I don't need to give the alignment a second thought. Just one of the thousand things that trike riding and ownership demands we sort out.

New trike with Rohloff owner here, too. Exactly my question answered. Thanks!

Ok so what I do is what you have done with the chain into the highest gear to take the wheel off , then I change the derailleur to the first gear position so that when I put the wheel back in it gets rid of all that extra chain. I rest the derailleur gently on the grond , hopefully not having any movement back and forth to deal with.As for the flat fixing , I take the tire and tube off in one movement and leave the tube in the tire. Pump it up and listen for the leak . Now you know exactly where to look for a pointy object in the tire. Fix it pump it up , reinsert, and keep smiling .

I find it harder to re-install hte wheel in low gear. Sounds like your tires don't fit real tight, that makes it easier!
@brucewmclaughlin90725 ай бұрын
@@peterstull Oop's I forgot the wheels I have are disc so that makes getting it on a bit easier. Negotiating with a V-brake and a fat tire is annoying.

an extra tip for loading: Attach a small, rectangular piece of rug to the end of the tubes which touch the ground. They can stick out about 4-6" onto the ground from the tip of the pvc pipes at the ground level. This is a common trick with ramps for cars, as the rug gives a surface for the wheels to grab onto as they are loading onto the pvc tubes. Cheap carpet or rugs will suffice and are not in the way for storage in car or truck.

I don't want to come off as snarky and nasty here, because I"m not, but I think you just did a great job NOT selling this rack to people over fifty or sixty years old. Even when it's "kneeling", you had to lift your heavy bike, and getting the fork positioned properly looked awkward at best. Then to tie down the rear of the bike, you easily plopped your fit looking body down to sit on the cement, and zipped back up to standing again, all while talking and not sounding the least bit out of breath. This product looks pretty great for fit people, but a lot of older folks will probably pass on buying it.

Attach some small chains or canvas type of fabric straps to link each long piece of PVC pipe so that when you spread them out to use them, they don't slide away. The chains/straps would not hamper stacking the three long pieces into your vehicle. It could easily be a one-person set up then. Nice video and thanks for sharing the idea.
@peterstull2 ай бұрын
Neat idea, thanks! I was thinking a rigid piece would be a bit nicer but it would have to be esily removable to go back in hte vehicle.

Thank you for this tutorial. It was concise and educational. I'm a new Rohloff owner. I didn't even consider changing a flat, until a Rohloff owning friend said I needed to learn how to take the wheel off. This video was just what I needed.

last resort, i have a spray bottle with water and a couple drops of liquid detergent.. i spray the outside of the tube and air it up.. bubbles will form where the hole is.. i dry it with a cloth and mark it with a chalk pencil..

Ideal Situation.. wouldn't it be nice if you only got flats while your Recumbent trike was sitting at counter level and the tires/wheels were not touching the ground..? This isn't realistic for anyone.. we need to know how to elevate the back of the trike, and lift off a heavy/awkward wheel with a Roloff by our lonesome.. Those situations need two people and a block to put under the frame.. LOL.

It looks like it could be about 10 cm shorter wheel base...lot of space between seat and back wheel...

Still looks like a two person job.
@peterstull2 ай бұрын
Yes, with an E-trike and Karen's handicap a second person is better. Longer ramps would make it easier but they have to fit in the vehicle and Karen wanted to avoid the complication of telescoping or folding.

@gmaneis6 ай бұрын
You're right to think not too many people ride tandems, but he was just trying to show how easy it is to put an even larger tandem bike on that thing. In my opinion, as stated in my comment above, he failed to sell this contraption to older people, but if you're young and fit, it might work. I think I'll stick with rolling my trike into my Honda CR-V!🙂

I like this. pVC pipes weigh a lot less than metal Ramos and take up less room. I need to figure out how to do this with my 4x4pick up and 80 lb full size e-trike.

I would very much like to NOT have to roll it onto its side for folding, because, as you have pointed out, you need some soft ground to not scratch it. Otherwise, I love it and don't fold it often.
