Hey Dean, a few observations. 👍 I reckon the packrafts angle to the flow increased the likelihood of the capsize. The low volume and technical nature of the rapid meant that the capsize happened very quickly. This won’t be news to you but for others reading, the capsize occurred because of the sideways travel angle vs a more downstream angle. Rescue of PR ok, like WW kayaks I recommend flip it upright asap and shunt/ push the boat as first two stages of rescue to improve speed of clean up. All boats travel better on their hull vs upside down 🙂 Standing in flow, yep probably not ideal. Again it seemed to happen fast and it didn’t look like it was planned per se. Only thought when looking for the lost paddle for other viewers would be to hold off on searching in forceful water until you have a mate closely observing you in the water. They might then be able to come to you aid if things go pear shaped. Last thing I’d say is that split paddles on that grade and in that kind of location would be worth the extra bit of effort during the walk in 👍 Good action cheers Zak

@@MrZakShaw hey Zak, yeah all good points. Thank you. Definitely be carrying a spare 4 piece on more trips after this experience, live and learn they say eh.

That is an excellent breakdown, bro. It was like Muel did the OTB on a bike, and drove his paddle into the bottom of the river. I suppose this could have leveraged on and snapped the paddle. I presume on multi-day trips you take a split paddle inside the packraft? Tricky one - that's a lot extra to take, isn't it? I suppose you could share a split paddle between a few boats.
@DeaneParkerAdventureChannel2 ай бұрын
@@DamianStones on the Karamea we took a spare 4 piece and yeah shared it out. Packrafters have the advantage of being able to transform to hikers and get the hell out of there but this is not as ideal as keeping the party together. I will take a spare more often after this situation.

Hey bro, you did a pritty tidy team rescue, shot man! In terms of what to differently he should have kept his boat in his hand or rolled up. Your rescue was sweet, your team helped him get down river to he pack raft. The foot entrapment aint pritty but he took that risk himself, he knew the rapid he was in.

I think that just questioning what happened and what the response was, is the best part - if that makes sense. I’ve had 99 commercial flips as a raft guide, and I’ve always felt I could have done something better, whatever that was. I think that’s the lesson - always wonder if something could have been done better. Though I’m not saying there was necessarily anything there. It appears to be that the paddle “grabbed” as the boat went over, so yeah, I think it pinned there, and possibly broke. And that colour water is hard to read, so that downstream flip seemed to come from nowhere. I’m a packrafter too, I’ve 3 boats so I know a little about your world. I thought it was normal swim and rescue stuff

It must be so hard paddling down the rivers with no chimes/hull shape to be able to carve in and out of waves. Just floating with the current it’s gotta be as bad as paddling an Eskimo Topo WW Kayak that I once owned before upgrading to a modern creak kayak. I understand it’s much easier to carry into the put in point.

Great work! I'm impressed at how well you were able to paddle with a bike on the rafts. I'm a reasonably experienced whitewater kayaker and packrafter but I've only had one attempt at a short test trip with my bike on the front of my alpacka wolverine. I found that the bike severely restricted my ability to paddle properly. I actually gave up on the bike, stashed it in the bushes, continued down the river and came back for it later 😅

Rocky rivers are tue worst due tue risk of damaging the bike. But a modern packraft can carry a big load on the bow and as it turns out and awkward one too. Cheers for your comment
