I've sat for quite a while in New York City traffic with a police or ambulance siren blasting right behind me, and I can tell you that there was literally nothing I could do to get out of the way. The lanes are narrow so even if you move to the far right or far left of the lane you are currently in, there's still no room for an emergency vehicle to get past you. And if there is traffic backed up in the lanes that are to the left and right of you, as well as cars in front of you that are stopped or barely moving, it could literally take you 5 or 10 minutes to be able to get out of the way of the emergency vehicle. I've heard that in some cities ambulances actually have devices that can turn the traffic lights up ahead to green, in order to get the flow of traffic moving again. But we don't have that in New York City. So if the light is red all that everyone can do is basically just sit and wait until the light turns green.

That was a bad call on the drivers part! They normally avoid construction zones during heavy traffic like this... unless the construction was not properly registered with emergency services. That actually happens quite a bit 🙄

As humans we are all still stupid as fuck for the way that we over crowd cities like this. The US is pretty big with a shit ton of land that we never use. I live in Texas which is a pretty big state. I don’t think we even take up half the state. Its to much of a hassle to live up north. Down here is way less expensive. Way less stressful. We can actually get 8 hours sleep, 8 hours work, and the rest recreational time.

Too much car dependence. It is simply not practical for every person in a dense urban environment to be driving a car. It becomes slower than walking. Improve public transport, cycling infrastructure. Give people a convenient clean and safe way to travel and many will take it. You don't need to coerce just make good alternatives.

You have to reduce the number of car lanes and parking lots. Build (protected) bike and bus lanes instead and emergency vehicles can use it. It's easy!
