I have heard you talk about diameter limit cutting a few times. Diameter limit cutting is high grading by most definitions. Silviculturally speaking there’s not a lot wrong with high grading/dia limit cutting so long as you have adequate regeneration potential or advanced regen. Managing for white tails can be “bad forestry/silvics” but it doesn’t have too. You can make a lot of browse in short order by harvesting… but if your not releasing and or regenerating quality trees your not practicing sound Forestry. Not saying you’re doing that, just saying. I think a person can cut whatever merchantable trees they want, so long as you cut the junk trees out as well. Good for deer and the timber resource. There is a happy medium, especially if you utilize NRCS cost share to fund TSI work. Never forget that patch cuts have their place for deer and timber…. Just as long as one can tolerate the visual…. So easy to just wack/stack and meet both resource needs :)

I appreciate the comment. First off when I discuss diameter limit cutting, it is simply the easiest place to begin pointing people to. When I’m actually marking timber, a certain diameter is simply a starting point. I am always balancing as much as absolutely possible between taking the good as well as the bad. My goal is always to leverage good timber on a project to get the buyers to harvest the lower grade timber. Unfortunately the timber market is in a place where low grade timber at times can cost the logger money to even cut depending on location which makes it extremely difficult to get it cut. In certain markets across the Midwest people are literally only cutting white oak and walnut and leaving everything else. That makes me sick. That being said, I have probably not stressed enough that having timber cut is simply not one and done. There is work on the back end In most cases for the land owner to do, between prescribed burning and further TSI. I happen to be working on several videos currently on this very subject and will be releasing them soon!

I had an October 21st morning a couple years ago that had all sorts of buck activity. It was pretty much non-stop the first 3 hours, and not one buck walked past one of my SD trail cameras on my property. My best friend slept in that morning, because his cellular cameras hadn't been showing much activity. If you're seeing it on a cellular camera, you already missed it in my opinion. Nothing beats time in a stand. Good luck to everyone this coming season!

There are plenty of loggers who will screw you too. I think the key with a solid forester is they know what the value is so you won’t be undersold and can manage your expectations in the way the timber is cut and the property is left afterwards. It really depends on the logger, forester, or mill. Basically all can screw you if, it’s just a trade off of what you want from your sale or what risk you’re willing to take.

@@treestandforestry That makes sense. Does landowner have a specified amount of time in their contract with you to cut you a check after they are paid by timber buyers? Just wondering what safe guards are in place for you to ensure you get your agreed percentage of sale and get a better idea of the process of payment once the sale is complete.

The way my sales are structured is that the buyer is required to put 25% down within two weeks of signing of the contract and then my fee is taken out of that as soon as the Landowner is paid the deposit.

Sun light to the forest floor! Promote the herbaceous growth to feed browsing herbivores, flowering plants for insects and the insects can feed avians, reptiles ect. Red oaks' acorns are bitter, often fail to produce a crop each year, and that is a very limited time window of food.

The wind storm in mid Ohio that happened in 2021, knock a dozen or so 2ft+ base trees adjacent to our house. If the winds were 180, we'd be dead. Also, Mohican state forest had tornados. The state put up signs, stating it was a tornado and not logging, due to the excessive complaining from the general public. Guessong they want a park like settinh and not a natural forest.

We had a giant walnut fall after a wind straight a few days ago. Very thick very tall. I'm still devastated. It was my favorite tree. Ripped up by the roots. My fiancee wants to sell it and I want to prop it up and admire its natural beauty even though it is dead. We lost 7 trees in the wind straight. They were all our 100+ foot trees so our view had been destroyed. I've considered selling the walnut to buy new baby trees but it's hard to let it go. Even for a few thousand. 😢

I currently am under contract with a buyer that has bought our standing trees. The contract states that the trees must be harvested within 1 1/2 years. If they don't harvest within that time frame, what is the common rule of thumb? I am not considering burning the buyer but feel as though I've lost time on my regeneration of new growth since this project was just a thinning for a major harvest 10 years down the road.
@treestandforestry
@treestandforestry 2 ай бұрын
Typically they will try to get an extension but that is something they need to pay for. Hopefully they put a deposit down when they signed the contract, in which case they do not get their deposit back if the contract runs out and you decide you don’t want to extend.

Non assignment clauses are common and standard for all types of obligations and to not include in any contract is foolish. Preformance standards should also be a part of timber agreements specifying time to complete removal of unused debris stumpage etc. and regrading and finishing standards of harvest plot as a min. to protect all parties. Yes that can definitely work. You’ll want to have them come out and price the logs before you haul them in. Once you haul them in they know it’s more work to take them somewhere else vs taking what they offer you.

So you see this deer all the time. He in your words is constantly out in daylight. So instead of just maybe doing one small improvement you are going to roll the dice and change possibly all the movement of all the deer on the property. So now you possibly have to relearn the property. I don't understand the logic. Unless you didn't ha e that buck as dailed in as you stated. If all is how you say it is I would have nailed that buck then played with the property. Your design is nice and sound and will likely turn out well but you have taken a one year gamble for no reason. Just my opinion. It's not like you just trimmed some shooting lanes or added a small food source. When you are hitting home runs you don't go looking for a new swing coach.
