I once took 10th of December out of the library and got so frustrated with it that I threw the book across the room and the binding buckled. Saunders seems like a great guy but... not a big fan of that book. Love you, Beth!!

Thanks for this. I came upon this in a roundabout way through Erik Larson's "The Splendid and the Vile." What I can say is that it is not only heartbreaking but it's extremely accurate. I am approaching the one-year anniversary of losing my own flat to a fire... and losing all of my books. This is truly what's it's like.

Love that she said all of this and she wrote a book like this bc there aren't many books that portray the mind of a black women deep down and how we actually have feelings and go through all this shit but everyone doesn't allow us to and just portrays us as strong. Also as a Jamaican girl myself I loved that she wrote this about a black Jamaican girl bc I feel like there aren't many books about black girls who are Jamaican surrounding topics like this

Why did you read something so sad? The intro made it sound like you would be helping offset the sadness of the news and troubles that people have now. I do not understand your choice.

Thank you kind Fran for bringing us these stories. I am old and clearly not as educated as you and see this story as just what she wrote, two awkward poorly socialised middleaged people who recognise each other as being similar and therefore able to be together for walks and talks, however jerky, which actually cheers them each up as much as it is possible for such people to be. When I was young such people existed, some of my teachers were similar. They had been brought up in undemonstrative families at a time when children were seen and not heard and being shy never quite learned how to connect to others. So for me this is a story to show us there is always reason to hope no matter how low you are feeling.

Smart and funny, these two seem to have quite the rapport, good to have this video even though the interview could have been longer, and thus doubly as good.😎👍

"What about a book you're supposed to like but actually you think is rubbish?" "Most of them," she says to the lady who owns a bookstore. The lady promptly kicks her out, saying she needs to go sell some books. 😂😂😂

This is a find: I did not really expect anyone reading from Rose Macaulay on KZbin, far less a story I am unfamiliar with. For the second time I am reading Rose's *Last Letters To A Friend 1952-1958* and I have two of her novels in new paperback editions. And I intend to reread the biography of Rose by Sarah LeFanu after which I shall turn again to *The Towers of Trebizond*.

What an awful book! First time I have ever binned a book in my life! Shallow chick-lit of the worst kind, poorly written, unlikely protagonist, disgusting graphic sex, does women a disservice instead of promoting black lives…. Worst book you could give your daughter what a disgrace! Who are the people promoting this trash and WHY?

100% I am going to come and visit your book shop someday.I live in the United States in Lakeland Florida. They got rid of my favorite old bookstore and I really love to buy old poetry books. My son lived in London for a year recently and he went to get me an old poetry book from London how exciting!!! He really wants to take me to England so bad. When I do go I am definitely making a pilgrimage to your shop!!! I really enjoy your KZbin channel. you are awesome!!!

So happy to have discovered these posts! I try to settle down every day to listen. I live in Pennsylvania, U.S. and aside from the pure enjoyment of hearing these readings, it is very charming to see that because of the presentation of the display, your clock reads backwards to mine and you read your book back to front rather than front to back as I do .... A perfect image of the slightly different perspective of the English culture to my American one. Of course I'll have to order this book... hoping I won't actually need to read it back to front ;)
