Erdtree Deserves it. If Fromsoft Nickel and Dimed the community and sold it as a standalone title that wasn’t a full sequel the argument would immediately evaporate. What does the community stand to gain from saying “Don’t shoot for the stars on DLC it won’t be recognized if it’s truly exceptional.”

@@bobdobbz9334 A game is a game. DLC is DLC. It’s not just the requirements for playing them that makes them different, it’s the fact that it’s an add on, it’s not fully separate from elden ring. It’s not a game. If SOTE released as a standalone title than I think it deserves to be nominated, but it didn’t. Because it’s DLC not a game.

Any full game on the market actually has an advantage over any DLC to be nominated for Game of The Year because it is a fully formed game. Any DLC has to work 2 times or 3 times as hard to win such a nomination. It should not be disqualified based on the technicality that it is just an add on. Doing so would be a great disservice to the creators who put so much time and effort into a simple expansion. It should be judged solely on the merits of its content.

By that logic, any DLC that follows the events of the story it takes place in, has a new map/area, new content, and a new mechanic or two should be considered for game of the year.

Sote is even better than the base game, it definitely deserves goty. Not only is it more streamlined and smooth to play through due to the smaller map. But it only has 4 less remembrance bosses. Not to mention the bosses are just better in sote. It’s basically elden ring 2.

Dude, you're so on point here, I believe Elden Ring dlc deserves goty. I played half the games nominated, and the shadow of the erdtree was the most fun I had in gaming all year, leaps and bounds. But end of the day that's my opinion, changes nothing either way. 🤷🏻‍♂️

That's plain retarded. A DLC is the same old game with a side story. If a side story is game of year then there is no point in making new games. DLC should have their own separate categories. The 4 i say for top, metaphor, sh2, bmw, ff7r. honorable mention to spacemarine 2 for making a game for the boyz by the boyz.

The Palpatine clip had me dying. The immediate overreaction some gamers have is insane to me, and I even agree with them. I just think DLC should have it's own category. Even though, if SOTE was a standalone game, it should totally be nominated

Its downloadable content. Its part of a game thats already won game of the year and probably will go on to win game of the decade like Last of Us 1 did. Technically, SotET has already won game of the year when Elden Ring won it. No need to award the DLC a second helping.

@bobdobbz9334 you cant play SOTEt without elden ring. That by definition makes it NOT a whole game. The story is a direct extension of Elden Ring. Many non players after watching youtube lore videos get mislead about the scope of the game, when in reality its still based on Elden Ring as a base. Its just one more "ending" for Elden Ring. Not a full game.

@@Nightcrawler8919 The story of SOTE is a complete traditional narrative arc like you learn about in English class in school-inciting incident, climax, conclusion. SOTE's story is arguably *more* complete than base Elden Ring. And why should SOTE not be considered a full game just because you find it inconvenient to meet the requirments to play? Games are alowed to have prerequisites to play. All games require gaming hardware and usually a TV to play. Some games require an internet connection. Some games require more time than others. Some require more money or skill. Why should your laziness or lack of interest determine what is considered a game?

@Nightcrawler8919 Never said it wasn't a DLC. It is a DLC *and* a full game. There is no reason by definition that the two must be mutually exclusive. DLC is just "Downloadable Content" you can download a full game. And you can add a full game to an already existing game-computers won't explode. 1+1=2, after all.

It is not a game. It is a dlc that requires beating an actual game to a certain point to even start. It certainly deserves awards and I loved it, but it does not deserve game of the year. This is setting a bad precedent.

Genuine question, but why should anything other than quality be a factor when deciding game of the year? Any argument is just semantics, so what if other studios start making DLC? If they are good enough to get nominated, then that can only be a good thing.

100% agree. No dlc should EVER be nominated for GOTY...it's extremely short-sighted. Why would game companies need to make new games when they can just tack on a dlc and get GOTY? This sets a dangerous precedent that will allow the same game to cannibalize GOTY and push out anything new and innovative. Dlc should be its own category so that we can keep recognizing new games. Aside from that, dlcs are _not_ a "game" - they are additional content for the _BASE_ game. You literally cannot play Shadow of the Erdtree unless you own and have installed Elden Ring.

That's fair enough, I think a DLC of the year category could absolutley work in principle, just feel it would be creating a redundant category for something that every year most people would probably say "X" is absolutely the winner, like last year being Cyberpunk 2077 Phantom Liberty, and 2022 being Delicious Last Course etc. Etc. again though thanks for watching!

I think the idea that game companies would stop making sequels as full games is a little extreme to me, as if that was true, the most money hungry ones (COD, FIFA and other sports games) would have stopped producing games years ago if it would benefit them both financially and critically. I think that the game awards are important to an extent but not important enough to completely design their sales and marketing strategy around if you get me? Especially as the landscape is constantly changing and Triple A Games take longer to make, I think no triple A company (and defo not indie) are designing their games based on awards at The Game Awards. Like I mentioned with Overwatch 2, if the developer didn't care, they would just slap a 2 on what I would call absolutely a DLC and call it a day (Even look at Payday 3 when that released 😬). But again, understand your concerns and glad you watched the video!

By definition you are wrong. DLC is literally just "Downloadable Content"-could be anything downloadable. And videogames are just "interactive entertainment". Just because DLC is not USUALLY a full game, does not mean that it is mutually exclusive.

I bought the collectors and i feel like i got scammed tbh 4 hours in almost done with the Halloween one and prob get that from evil dead but i got a Michael myers plush and some trading cards was no where near the extra 30 bicks
