The pictures used for Charles II of Spain are not him. Charles had an oversize jaw with a drastic underbite, among other physical oddities. He was the last Habsburg king of Spain, because his testicles were nonfunctioning. He was by all accounts a nice guy and generous, but understandably shy. He had difficulty chewing and therefore digesting food, his whole life. It just got worse. He died in 1700 at age 38, five days short of his 39th birthday. It was his misfortune to be the recipient of the cumulative genetic damage of centuries of inbreeding. His particular inbred line terminated itself brutally, denying him the normal basic satisfactions of eating, sex, and progeny. I am related to the Habsburgs, via the Gherardinis of Florence, Italy. But thankfully my line did not go that route. In fact one of my ancestors moved 200 miles partly so his children would not be tempted to marry cousins. The sad story of Charles illustrates why.

I was born in 1952. Growing up, I have witnessed quite a few women covering up with only a saree. It was a norm in rural areas. It wasn't so in the cities, though.

“India” did not enforce a breast tax. It was allegedly done by one small kingdom in the South and there’s been speculation in recent years that this was a myth. Do better.
