Emotional intelligence is the ability to recognize, understand, and manage your own emotions, as well as understand and influence the emotions of others. He has no idea why she's upset about it, he just knows she's upset. He has no idea how to help her not be upset, besides giving her what she wants. Her being upset is making him upset. This is the antithesis of emotional intelligence.

@ellaineiglesias that's the thing though, it's not necessarily "who she is" it's "what she wants" and if she feels like throwing a fit and stressing others out is worth it because she will always get her way(which she does), then she will continue to do it and claim it's just "who she is". My brother once told me "I don't mean to be an asshole, it's just who I am", that's a sorry excuse for not trying to be a reasonable person. Having emotional intelligence would mean expecting reasonable behaviors from others and not marrying a dictator. Unfortunately he's already in it to lose and I guess swallowing his dignity is easier for him at this point since he already realizes he's at a dead end.

Emotional intelligence is having the ability to understand and recognize someone’s feelings (his wife) regardless of how it is. Despite Emily being Emily, he accepts and love her for who she is and it works out for them surprisingly

he actually doesnt have emotional intelligence, and its very evident throughout the show (ie. when he meets dean, how he treats lorelai over dating Jason, how he treats emily when he retires, etc.).

...and *THAT,* boys and girls is what we call 'enabling' and it is a very cruel and irresponsible thing to do to someone you say you love. How can someone become healthier if nobody points out their bad behaviour as soon as it appears? Won't they, instead, become naturally _worse_ over time? Won't it become harder and harder for them to accept that it is bad behaviour, let alone be willing to change? Won't that naturally lead to them becoming more and more miserable and lonely--who wants to be around someone who is constantly behaving badly?!? Timely (gentle) correction isn't hate; it is love in action.

I suggest in the future that you carefully assess each clip for healthy behaviour before posting, as *FAR* too many people who haven't learned these things yet will think that his behaviour is healthy and loving. ...and will copy it.
