I have a soft spot for the often detested Hitachi sets, I rode on them when they were brand new, the public hated the fixed bone hard seating, they used to rattle along at a cracking pace, had noisy couplings. Had a lot of cab rides in them when I was a boy, my uncles drinking mate was a driver on Melbourne suburbans. Blast from the past about two years ago when I found Hitachi power car 66M sitting in a paddock at Bumberry NSW, along way from home! Decent skidded wheel on 288M, not good. Great little video.

Not much has changed since I was in BA in 1986, good EMD loco sounds too. I remember the roving entertainers on the suburban trains. A mother and her three singing daughters doing a song & dance performance and the stand out was an old man with two little dogs doing tricks. After the brief show they solicit donations then move to the next carriage and so on. Was that an ALCO in the background around 10.09 mark? B818 a GE? Platforms same as 1986, leaky roofs! A611 sounded like an EE too. Great video, thanks for the memories!

Never cared for Hitachis and don't know what some people saw in them. They were ugly, noisy, smelly, icy in winter and mobile saunas in summer. The public hated them. If one turned up to a station I always used to wait and hope the next train was a Comeng.

Great video. My first interstate trip was onboad the mighty Indian Pacific from Adelaide to Sydney back in 2006 but the highlight of the journey stopping at Broken Hill to offer where we greeted by friendly locals or if your interested in a bus tour around the township the back on onboard the Indian Pacific to continue your journey to Sydney. It absolutely fantastic experience for me but it would fair to say I would love to experience the Indian Pacific from Adelaide to Perth.

Many of these are the same train formations I had seen when I was a kid in Argentina in the early 1970s, and they were already old by then. The mechanics kept them going somehow, and they were given numerous coats of paint over the years, but there comes a point when you can no longer put lipstick on a turd. These old trains broke down constantly - Doors remained open for the duration fo a ride, posing a great danger to any passenger. Windows were removed. People destroyed them: ripped the seats, defected everywhere, shattered windows, painted graffiti, and even set them on fire. All fo this, under Peronist democracy. The country was better off under the military administration. I rode the one at @17:44 in the year 2001. It was already a disaster then - and I was in Pullman class, which is higher than 1st class.

You might be suprised but i know all of this. In the 90s a 80m train is heading down the Glen Waverly Line. Heading to its next stop, Syndal. Further down the line, there was a Another Hitachi Train. It was stuck on the tracks and couldent Go because it having problems with the doors. Meanwhile the 80m train Passed A red signal. The driver didint notice because he was paying attention to the Speed and Signals. But not the red signal. The driver Saw the Hitachi train infront of him. He slammed on the emergency Brakes. But, disaster strikes. So thats how that happend.
@mendocinobeano Жыл бұрын
@@transportfanaussie Mostly correct however he did see the red signal and he stopped. It was in 1989 and I was a Guard and very glad I wasn't on either of the trains involved. The procedure was to stop at the automatic signal and if the line ahead was clear you could pass the signal. This would trip the air and the brakes would automatically apply. You then had to wait 60 seconds and proceed at a speed that would enable you to stop short of any obstruction on the line. After tripping the driver forgot about going slowly and came over the hill and into Syndal station at track speed and ran into the back of the pass on the platform.
@transportfanaussie Жыл бұрын
@@mendocinobeano oh wow, you were the guard? That's surprising.
@mendocinobeano Жыл бұрын
@@transportfanaussie No I wasn't the Guard. As I said I was "very glad I wasn't the Guard on either of the trains involved" in the collision but I was a Guard on the suburban network when it happened. I started in 1980 and was based at the (ERD) Electric Running Depot in Batman avenue in the city and then I transferred to the Ringwood depot in 1986 but we still used to travel on this line regularly as part of our roster.

My sole hope is that public-private partnerships in Argentina will heavily invest in light rail/trams throughout the greater Buenos Aires area so that the refurbished light rail/tram system will eventually eclipse that of Greater Melbourne.

The heart & soul of melbourne's once majestic fleet! The old silver workhorse is a real survivor (1972 to 2014+) that lasted and adapted longer than most. Wether it was its unique look, the oil smell, how warm they were to sit in cold days, those couches which got pretty hot to sit on on hot days to lastly it's polarized black window to keep out the sun in it's final days. One of the toughest fleet that's only downfall was it's lack of time and old age to a changing city that it would never bow or yield too as it always kept it's throwback roots!!!

Great video. I gotta say though I think these locomotives are being abused. Those trains really could use a couple more locomotives to help get the training rolling. Once the train is moving good then to save fuel disengage them but just my opinion.

They were good trains, most people seemed to like them. Better than the X'trapolis & Siemens junk we have today. They just didn't last. Perhaps a coat of paint to keep the rust away . The Comeng trains are probably the best of today's lot.
@Alexander_Dunn4 жыл бұрын
kentlandzintoba yes comeng are best bcuz they have air con and weren’t cheap so they last longer, aren’t bouncy, but I think Siemens are the smoothest
@TheAxelay4 жыл бұрын
The Comengs right now are on a lifeline just because they'll introduce the "High Capacity Metro Trains" which will be set to replace them soon but I don't know when but it'll happen through?! For me I guess my fav are the Harris-Comeng-like refurbished fleet because it's a mixture of old and new even though they barely lasted that long sadly.....

@@TheAxelay Sadly I think the infrastructure is badly out of date and the whole system needs to be updated before new trains run.

Never liked the Hitachi. They were the noisiest clankers ever existed, more noisier than the Tait (Red rattler) trains due to the fact their bogie drives had lose steel plates holding the brake shoes and washers to hold the plates in place that were vibrating and making a helluvia noise each time the bogie drives rolled onto rail joints and track switches. The Harris were the quietest, softest trains Melbourne has ever had.
