0:42 lots of weird, vintage mics use a 1/4 unbalanced mic input, but frankly, i feel like a higher impedance would still be better given the mics also are probably pretty high impedance, presumably, without an in-line transformer

I’d be very interested to know how the optical element in the ola5 compares to a wa-1b. It seems to exhibit similar behavior with the obvious lack of tubes.

What an incredible video for a deep dive on the circuitry of the 1073. Do you happen to sell these premade?
@Magnulus7612 күн бұрын
The thing is... alot of those discrete component designs don't necessarily work better than modern gear with integrated circuits and external power supplies. Right now, some of the better preamps or interfaces, in terms of signal-to-noise ratio, actually use really cheap wall warts, in fact.

This video made me respect and love a 1073 even more than I already do ! We’re can I buy this 500 series ?
@edevans421023 күн бұрын
what you didnt take into account is that the ratio is in the FEEDBACK and doesnt follow exactly as the voltages you describe. so the ratio switches dont EXACXTLY follow ratio switching like a dbx compressor would, but it isnt quite as simple or as non-ratio as you describe.

I've been dealing with Charlie recently and he is a great, generous and cool gentleman. I agree after creating a 500 series module I switched out the Cinemag for a Ludahl and my God it's so rich. No wonder Neve packed his later consoles with them. They just sound like real music.

Thank God!! I about had a heart-attack when my G-Bus didn't light up. Like above (at 00:48) I had a couple of my IC2, IC3 NE5532 opamps (x4) backwards. Everything lights up now! Keeping fingers crossed... still have calibration to do. 🤞

Dude, I adore these types of videos. I wish y'all would make more of them. A little 2 minutes "compressor workout" section tacked on at the end (so we can hear the unit on some drums or a mix) would be the icing on the cake. In fact I would pay for such content. Thanks for all you do!!

I bought this very unit from Goodwin way way back in 2012 when he was first starting out. It is an amazing DI (to all the naysayers out there ranting on about Radial)... its not a Radial clone, it is a passive Ferrite DI with a Cinemag transformer in it. The best you can get frankly, as by the way are his videos and his kits, as attested by the fact that 12 years later, he has established himself as one of the leading voices on the DIY audio scene and built a successful company. Well done Goodwyn and thanks for the video.

I find running a stereo summed signal into two mono preamps causes phase issues. I usually separate the mix into dual mono signals before running them into the preamps. Then sum them back together.

what is the software you are using for measuring THD?
@Tom-nf6xo2 ай бұрын
Great video, thank you so much !!! I am suspecting that the 12% THD is coming from the FET gain reduction cell at the input, and not from the first 3 transistor gain block. Is it possible for you to measure THD at the FET gain reduction cell? And what rms signal level is at the FET gain reduction cell when you measured 12% THD at the output of the first 3 transistor gain block? I would appreciate your information. Thanks again !

Signals aren't balanced all the way through BECAUSE YOU'D HAVE TO DOUBLE THE COMPONENTS AAARGH. Yes. Loud forehead slap. I learn so much from these. You rule.
@BrentLeVasseur2 ай бұрын
In true high end gear there are two independent signal paths for balanced which means it stays separate from the power supply all the way to the output. Cheap stuff doesn’t do that and it basically defeats the purpose of having a balanced signal chain. A good example of a true balanced topology is the KTE Holo May DAC. You should do a tear down video on that as it will blow your mind. It has two separate resistor ladder DAC stages for the balanced signal and keeps them separate all the way from the power supply to the output, and it does it again with a separate DSD DAC.

I really want to thank you for everything you do. I enjoy all of your content, it feels so right to spend some time listening to you sharing knowledges in a such humble and efficient way. I think one of the reasons you are a great teacher and a great gear manufacturer is the fact that you seem to deeply understand the reasons why any student could be intimidated from learning. Just watched the whole series about measuring audio equipment with REW, you can not know how valuable this is to me. Cheers!

Correct me if I'm wrong but when you demo the actual assembly I believe you have just put the pot inbetween pin 2 & 3, kind off shorting it via the resistor. This is not really a parallel connection to the pre. I would have thought that a better mod would be on the preamp side not the mic side, otherwise mic manufacturers would add switches in their mics to change impedances as a gimmick. Also, the 10:1 ratio is actually not that bad, it might be overkill for some mics but my experience is that transients "seem" more responsive with a higher ratio. I'm actually wondering whether you couldn't increase the output impedance with the a dual pot in series with the pre.. rather than parallel.. hmm.. I think this idea seemed great but you haven't convinced me that you've fleshed it out and also actually tested it properly using spectrum analysis. Cool idea tho!

Thx for sharing. I'm sure of a nice design. However, does it sound exactly neve 1073?. I've heard warm audio 73 with charnhill transformers, vs. Neve 73LB 500 series. Neve sounded better. It would be nice to hear the difference . Thx.
@Signal_Glow4 ай бұрын
DiyRe Neve "clones" have either class A/B, or class B circuit if power supply sags under dynamic conditions. Another strange thing is calling 1290 preamp 1073 preamp/eq.
