This is also where I would put myself. I seem to have a full baritone and tenor range even extending low and high for both but my voice seems to literally sit/rest right in between the two so now that I can sing well I can actually do both well.

I find this super interesting and am trying to learn how to do it as a fellow opera singer! I'm finding that I'm having a difficult time practicing without creating quite a lot of tongue tension which ends up being quite vocally tiring as of course all of that is connected to the larynx. I would be SO interested to hear more about this from you and how you produce the sounds in a way that is complementary to an opera technique!

Caruso is actually believed to have died from a stage accident. A prop collapsed and crushed his abdomen and lower chest during a Samson and Delilah performance. It was pretty bad, just FYI, nut from the sources in his Wiki article: The day after it happened, he "suffered a chill and developed a cough and a "dull pain in his side". A few days later during a L'elisir d'amore he began "spitting blood as a result of a mouth or throat haemorrhage and the performance was cancelled at the end of Act 1". Within a couple weeks "the pain in his side was so excruciating that he was screaming". Drs finally correctly discovered the purulent pleurisy and empyema. He "lapsed into a coma and at one point, nearly died of heart failure". He did recover enough to live a few more months but eventually he got so bad "Drs commended that his left kidney be removed". But on his way to italy for the operation he crashed, and died that day from "peritonitis arising from a burst subphrenic abscess". Its basically an infection that obliterates the diaphragm and surrounding organs, its...exactly as bad as it sounds even NOW, let alone in 1921.

My teacher, Edward Dwyer (one of the great vocal researchers and pedagogues and a tenor), used to laughingly say that NO ONE is really a tenor. If you can develop those high notes, YOU'RE A TENOR! : )

Dude is baritone. The end. Lower voices can stretch it to higher notes but the quality of the sound is not the same and no comparison to a legit tenor that sings with proper technique (and not the nonsense they do now). As a matter of fact, I’ll say our baritone here sounds like a modern tenor. Big difference. For example, does he sound like del Monaco or Corelli? Of course not, and never will because he is a baritone. It’s pretty common to find baritones that label themselves as tenors and sing as tenors and not as baritones because they seriously believe they r tenors and viceversa; and they sound like shit. This also happens with low sopranos thinking they r lyric or colorstura sopranos and sing very high stuff and sound like a joke even tho modern audiences find it impressive. I once met a delusional alto that thought she was a lyric soprano… Opera has become a circus really.

Michael has the best of both worlds in that he’s excellent as a tenor but has the stronger baritone speaking voice. I have a good tenor singing voice but my speaking voice is, to put it mildly, not very impressive. If you are old like me think of the tv show “Get Smart “

so absurd, lol. A tenor that thinks he's a baritone by singing woofy and tongue tensed/forcing the larynx down. And the fact that he thinks he has a low speaking voice is hilarious, legitimate baritones speak lower than he does (search cornell macneil for reference).

This brought back memories of my grandmother. She was a child dancer in the 1920s and had many stories. One performance she danced right off the stage and landed in the lap of one of the brass players! Stay safe and thank you for the beautiful singing.

Although I'm a rock/pop singer, I have always categorized me as a baritenor. My influences have been David Bowie, Bryan Ferry, and even Elvis. I find that they range in that sweet spot. I've been active since 1985 fronting several groups, opening for majors acts, and was the 10-year frontman to the late Jorge Santana (97-07). Have been releasing well-received original music singles since 2020. You can catch more at my channel, but I'd be curious to hear if I'm in that category according to you ears! Thanks!

Julian Zimmermann did this with the natural (Baroque) Trumpet. What happens on the outside of the mouth (trumpet) is what is happening on the inside of the mouth (harmonic overtones). Michael, you should talk to him. He's a nice guy and sharp. He's becoming famous. Watch this: m.kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y2bPl2CZndymkMU&pp=ygURanVsaWFuIHppbW1lcm1hbm4%3D

Also, folk music is based on the notes played on wooden herding trumpets which is the harmonic series. The world's music is not pentatonic but the natural scale (overtone series).

Hello. I think I'm a baritenor too. I have never studied vocals professionally, much less operatic vocals, but I am obsessed with the nature of my voice and the sounds that I am able to produce. my spoken notes are roughly G2-C#/D3. My general range is D#2-B5, sometimes C6. working range (chest, most likely) F2-F#4. bridge at about F/F#4. I can hit the G4 note, but with difficulty, on my chest. I recently sang and played notes A#/B4 mixed. The character of my voice is not too low, not too high. I'm not a professional vocalist, but I'm obsessed with it. I can’t really find any information about baritenor anywhere. Thank you for your attention and forgive me for my bad English, I am not a native speaker of this language and am writing through a translator. thnx

I did an overtone chanting afternoon with Jill Purce in the 1970s. I'm also an opera singer but didn't realise OC was also beneficial for voice. Jussi Bjorling was my Father's favourite tenor and there were many more, lesser known before him. We still have a fine collection of his 78s. It's also a very different training nowadays with certain modules taken out. Probably why modern opera singers look as though it's an effort to produce notes.
