I know I'm late to this but I just found your channel and love your reactions and thought I would add to the conversation with my opinion and experience. The thing that really bothers me is that yes, cultural appropriation is a thing and it happens. However, its seems like the only difference nowadays between cultural appropriation and cultural appreciation is if a white person is doing it. There are plenty of videos on TikTok of black women dressed in traditional Chinese and Japanese robes walking around China and Japan like they were on a runway (looking very beautiful) and all the comments called it cultural appreciation even though they had no understanding of what they were wearing or the cultural significance of it, it was just a fashion statement to them and in the videos you can see a lot of the Chinese and Japanese people didn't like it and were offended but that wasn't considered cultural appropriation. Nicki Minaj has appropriated Chinese and Japanese culture her entire career and doesn't even know the difference between the two when she's using them, but never gets called out for it because its supposed appreciation not appropriation. Yet when a white person has braids or dreads its always appropriation--there was a video of a white girl saying she wanted a certain braided hairstyle because she was inspired by a certain black actress who wore them and she looked beautiful and the white girl was clearly appreciating the style, she was ripped apart in the comments for appropriation even though she was clearly showing appreciation. Braids are not owned by a single culture, various white cultures throughout history have worn braids and dreads and it's been an important part of their culture and just as significant to them culturally as black peoples braids. One example is the Vikings who wore dreadlocks, it was a significant part of their culture and they adorned their dreads with certain jewellery with different symbols that meant different things like valour in battle and honouring their gods, they believed that their hair connected them spiritually to their gods and it was an extremely important part of Viking culture. Very few things are unique to a specific culture, because as people explored the world and encountered different cultures they celebrated it and shared it. It's only in recent history that this has been viewed in a negative light, but it's only negative when white people do it. It's okay for every other race to be inspired by and share things from various cultures but it's never okay for a white person to do it. It's so ridiculous that when I was in school I was jumped by 4 black girls who accused me of cultural appropriation because I have curly hair...my hair is naturally curly, it grows out of my head in 3b/c curls. I'm Irish, it's practically a stereotype that we all have wild red curly hair, it just so happens that I actually do. But apparently is wasn't okay for me to embrace my natural hair because my skin didn't have enough pigment to justify it. That's wild and yet no one thought what they did was racist, but if 4 white girls jumped a black girl for wearing a straight blonde weave or wig that would be clear cut racism, because it is. I'm tired of white people being dismissed and dehumanised and treated as a separate entity than everyone else. Being told that you can't be racist to white people, that it doesn't count because we're white, that being hated because of the colour of my skin is okay and having people on the internet advocate for the eradication and genocide of the entire white race or saying we should be banned from having children so our race dies out is acceptable and we can't say anything about it because if we do we are the racist ones. It's an entire trend on TikTok to be anti-white. And everyone acts like we don't have feelings or can't be hurt or impacted by all of this, which is so dehumanising and backwards. I'm all about equality, to me there is one race and that's the human race, but none of what I just discussed is equality, people who think that way about white people don't want equality they want superiority and racial revenge which in my opinion makes them the same as the very people they hate.
