Sorry, cut off... gorgeous videos of significant homes that I just can't watch because I have to listen to someone ramble on and on. Also I want to see the architecture without the video constantly being interrupted with a view of them looking casually high fashion while sitting in a special vintage chair. It's jarring and unnecessary. I'd much rather listen to someone who's geeking out about random minutia and smiles or gesticulates a lot.

@evoxideo
@evoxideo Ай бұрын
Pavilion style is a huge mid-mod love of mine. Hey, another idea for when you start doing full-length home reviews: if you keep it to beautiful architecture only, I'd love to see someone just stand in a room slowly panning around and saying nothing, or long pauses between information while touring the home. I think people believe they have to be always be talking and that's why they develop a fake-sounding rhythm to their speech. Oh and something I hate is listening to a rich person talk in detail about their home. It's like they're an art dealer... their take on things comes off as overly intellectual and product/consumption oriented. Also, as a working class guy I hate it when people say, "we built this" or "we decided to..." when what they really mean is that they hired a team of professional architects, builders and laborers who actually did everything, and that they chose from a variety of options presented them by those professionals rather than actually "deciding" anything. I've seen gorgeous home

So weird, I always thought that was an outdoor living room. Is the wall of glass a more recent addition?
@markhmendez
@markhmendez Ай бұрын
From what I can remember, the house was dilapidated when Mr Goldstein purchased it. He, along with Lautner, updated the home and I believe all that glass is relatively new.

Casa Kuderna. While I'm not on love with the new pool, I get that it was maybe put in when the current owner decided to subdivide the property before selling it, to block the view of whatever would be later built down in front, and I like that initiative. I love the size of the rooms, glass walls, the fireplace and small kitchen, and the guest house/studio - carport. The overall design reminds me strongly somehow of the first Star Trek, sort of a googie mid-mod that feels liveable but still almost shockingly modern.

How are you so knowledgeable about this home?

This is another house that lives beautifully in motion, whereas the still photography communicate only its eccentricity - unfortunately, in an awkward manner. Beautifully done. I like that in your videos you're often speaking with someone, also that your voice sounds geeky-intelligent.

Now this is interesting... I've never seen this one in video, only in still photography. Sometimes video can show you how a house actually "lives" and that's exceptionally the case here. I didn't like this house, found it too angular and confusing, but just with your short video I now "get it" and love it. So cool!
@markhmendez

Wow! That’s absolutely amazing to hear your change of perspective. It’s interesting because I’ve been so wrong about so many houses in terms of not liking them from photos, and then when seen in person, I’ve gone back on my opinion so many times, ha!

One thing you have going for you is that your speaking style is natural, whereas most house review guys get into some annoying rhythm with their speech. Another thing is that you're talking about the house and its history, which is both interesting and relevant. If you can avoid the routine gushing hyperbole and repetitive adjectives then you'll also be ahead of everyone else. Also, maybe you could specialize in architecturally significant homes? Instead of the usual, "gosh can you believe how much this [monsterpiece] costs?!?" which goes more onto the Lifestyles Of The Rich And Famous category and which I kinda hate. Those homes are usually really ugly. Just some suggestions. Good luck!

In the LA area I think 16B the "Salzman House" has a variety of textures, concepts, and utilty. It is mirrored like #22 in the sense that the front or street side of the house is no open to the wandering eye of the public, but the back side of the house is almost completely open.Frosted glass, brick walls, almost overtly skinny polls on the patio. The chimney seems natural but also distinct. Interior layout seems "normal" and doesn't go for over the top design. It is truly practical and certainly a model for mid century modernism.

How are architecture students preparing to create sustainable structures that are beautiful in a collapsing climate? What if they focused their artistic work to making less affluent spaces like government housing or refugee spaces more human friendly? Humanity is nothing without art, so, Survival is nothing without art. I wish so much that artists of this caliber would work for the people, not for the dollar.
