Unbelievable performances....what a shame the musical system has collapsed in the UK. This is high calibre playing. A quick shout out to Andy Maycock leader of the Double Bass Section.

Just magnificent, Silvestri, the BSO and Winchester Cathedral. Considered to be the best version I believe. I used to have this LP but cannot find that it was ever sold as a CD.

It's one of re best along with Barbirolli. It was released on an Artist Profile double CD and is also in the Silvestri Icon box set that includes all of his Bournemouth stuff.

I was interested to see this recording reissued by American Columbia Records, as I understand itis better-known as a 'Concert Hall Society' recording.

Muy brillante y expresiva interpretación. Desde las partes más melódicas e introspectivas, hasta las más rítmicas y veloces, todo el movimiento tiene una gran coherencia.

The stop-motion animation is what always comes to mind when I hear Hary Janos: the sentry post, the musical clock, Hary riding over the rooftops, giant Napoleon... Marvellous to see it again!!

RIP to a great, if today nearly forgotten, violinist. I remember how thrilled I was seeing and hearing his bravura rendition of Grieg's violin sonata in the movie 'Song of Norway', a good half-century ago. I was also chuffed about his Armenian background (close to my own Iranian ancestry)! His name remains embedded in my memory.

Incidentally, this is an ORIGINAL brass band work - the scoring was undertaken by Frank Wright "in close consultation" with Bliss - so as to represent his wishes - wishes that Bliss signed-off on. So although it was scored by Wright technically, the scoring completely represents Bliss' wishes. It is, most definitely, not a work arranged by Wright from a different medium.

A young Malcolm Arnold at 6:00 with his trumpet teacher, Ernest Hall from 1946. I think he joined the London Philharmonic Orchestra as second trumpet in early 1943, aged just 21 and was the youngest musician to hold that position.

I met Brian many years ago in Harlech, North Wales. He was a soloist with a brass band in the local theatre. He was gracious enough to talk with us after the show. My wife, who had a fine soprano voice, was at the time performing as a soloist in a local choir & her speciality was The Nun's Chorus. He was very encouraging. Sadly he died much too young. RIP Brian & thanks for the memories.

Brian was a superbly gifted down to Earth sort of a bloke you could share a pint with. He did some electrical work on our house in Oldham many years ago. Charming man. He probably didn't realise how brilliant he was.

I have no clue about any of the technical musical terms being discussed here but I have adored Sibelius’ music my whole life. I agree this is slower than most other versions of his 5th symphony I have heard but I found it enabled me to pick out and appreciate all the individual parts and notes even more. I know I’ve shown my ignorance but I really did enjoy it. I only wish we could have seen enjoyed Celibidache conducting it!! Watching him is a joy!!!
