About 1976 ish Martin was playing at Pickering Arms Folk club in Thelwall Cheshire . He stayed at my place in Stretford (as he did on numerous occasions till i emigrated in 1981). I learnt may songs that I still know but rarely had the courage to get up and sing at the club. I was learning "Hard Times of Old England" from the Coppers and had the music . But I don't read music so i asked Martin to play it, which he subsequently read and played . Months later it was part of his repertoire. I have a tape of that "session".

Legend. Genius. Best instrumental guitarist ever as well. So inspiring to hear him still at it. Nuff said.

Have yet to find anyone who doesn't love this track. Sad to think that success is dependent upon promotion. Tis a pity this track didn't become the massive hit it should've ........ am just grateful I came across it!

I'll prolly get lots of s**t for this, but ever since he switched from playing in front of a mic to using some sort of PU, his tone has become just godawful. Just a 57 would be so, so, so much better. Hopefully it sounds better in the house, but on KZbin his guitar sounds like a J160E with old, old strings.

Thank you for turning your attention to this, thank you for using your music to remind people and to remember of the people in Adriana. I am Greek, and this was a crime against humanity from my country. As there are so many more from this country against refugees and migrants. They are not even hiding it anymore, the pushbacks are constant, even though unquestionably illegal, and they are even supported by EU (under the table of course). The Greek and Italian seas have been the deathbed for so many refugees and the coastguards are just watching. No peace until justice!

Thanks so much for showing this. Martin is a real gentleman. Saw him perform solo, with Dave Swarbrick and later with his wife, daughter and a box player in New Zealand. I was over in Uk in 1986 with my wife. We were spending a weekend at the Beverly folk festival, and were crossing a square when Martin came towards us with his big open smile to say hallo and have a chat. His smile always reminds me of Dudley Moore. Martin was a great inspiration for me when I started performing traditional songs in the early 1970's. Reply

There's something quite emotional about hearing Martin sing traditional songs as an old man, like Sam Larner before him and Joseph Taylor before that and so many people before that whose names we will never know.
