Just Perfect. I spent the last 30 min trying to find an opera singer who could sing this well and all the great ones I tried fell far short. First was Callas. Her intonation was off, her trills were weak, she slid over the runs of notes instead of hitting each note, she would slide up to a high note with a kind of "wooh" instead of just hitting the note on the nose, and worst of all she tended to bellow in an aria that should be as light as air and as delicate as a flower. That was more or less how it went with all the others: Anna Muffo, Elsa Dresig, Adelina Patti, Marina Poplavskaya, Lisette Oropessa, Mirilla Freni, Angela Gheorghiu was one of the better ones but her voice was too big. Even Joan Southerland - she was technically perfect (was she ever not so) but the expression was forced and not believable. I was getting desperate - after all, these are some of the best singers in history but this aria was defeating them. Bidu sang it technically perfectly and she never overdid anything yet she still sang it with authority. Even the last high note came out so naturally, without any "look at me singing high in the opera Olympics" attitude attached to it. I was listening to a silly young girl discovering the wonder of her beauty and I was charmed. Such a pleasure. Now I can go to bed happy.

Brilliant! The richness of Gheorghiu's voice makes this rendition so amazing, other-worldy. Not the usual fare. The best, if you do not wear ear-blinkers, if you are a bit open to experience. Else go to vanilla flavour coloratura stuff, if that all you can handle.

This appears to be a film. Does anyone know if the whole opera is available in this rendition as a DVD or even an old VHS? I can't believe this escaped my "radar", and now I want to see and hear the whole thing! I've seen many references to the "Ricardo Muti version", but never realised it was recorded for posterity. And Waltraud Meier... say no more! She is just perfection in all she does!! Thanks for posting.
