I would go there if you love taking pictures of the architectural styles of the buildings but it is true they were renovating a lot when I was there. This was filmed in May of 2023 so hopefully, they finished most of it.

You were in The Bottom and no one suggested that you see the wonderful mural covering the sanctuary of the Catholic Church? But then, it is always good to save something for your next trip to Saba. Get a window seat on the starboard (right) side of the plane; you will enjoy seeing the cliffs as you arrive.

any tips on how to time it so that when you go to the beach it isn’t over run with the cruisegoers ? or is it kind of random?
@trevnti
@trevnti 2 ай бұрын
If you are getting off the cruise ship you are most likely walking from the port over to philipsburg but if you get a cab or arrange a day rental for a car then you have options. We loved the beach near Dans restaurant on the Dutch side but overall most smaller beaches on the French side aren’t as busy. You would need to get to these areas by car and renting one would be the most ideal.

@trevnti
@trevnti 4 ай бұрын
I would definitely get a phone number or two of the island taxi services which are at the ferry port, a hotel, or the airport. Walking is tough unless you are strolling around The Bottom settlement or Windward side due to how many inclines there are on the island. Renting a car is possible but its probably a very different process due to how small this island is so just get a taxi.

Can you park for free in Phillipsburg?
@trevnti
@trevnti 4 ай бұрын
you can and people sort of park wherever they can fit (even on sidewalks) but in general its a tough place to find parking. If you can visit Philipsburg on a afternoon when no cruise ships show up in the nearby port you can almost have the entire beach to yourself.

Thank you for your recommendation. I think I am going to book a place at the French side. I wat doubting about going to the Dutch side (since I am from the Netherlands my self), but if I wanted to be in a crowded area like the Dutch side I can stay home for less money.😂

The Dutch side still has plenty to offer (we have a separate video on that) but doing day trips to the Dutch side while staying in Grand Case is what we would have done if we had to do the trip all over again.

Saba wasn’t in the original King Kong movie at all. My friend’s dad made that up and it spread. So much so, that a shot of Saba does appear in the 2005 version. Fast and loose with a lot of “facts” about Saba, but at least Ti pronounced the name of the island like Sabans do!

Yes, and it has become a pet peeve of mine, but my friend finds it hilarious, and the tourist office apparently doesn’t mind a little white lie. Hey, people can fact check it right? LOL. Skull island in the original was filmed in San Pedro harbor with a painted background for the cliffs.

Thank you for having this video about The Bottom on Saba and not about you as most video hosts do. You showed the peace and quiet of the capital town of Saba late in the day (Sunday?). The chirping sounds are from our tree frogs. I like that you showed the "every day" area, but unfortunately, you did not enter the church toward the end of the video. The door is always a little bit open to keep out the hot sun and let people in. Inside the church is the most amazing mural covering the walls and ceiling of the sanctuary. Also, after leaving the church, it would have been best to turn right toward the house behind the stone wall. As in all of the old houses, half of the kitchen is built of stones. This house has its kitchen wall built into the wall of the street. This one of my favorite houses on Saba, filled with one of the most illustrious families of Saba. Please return to share your visits. Your videos are beautiful.

I've yet to make it there, but from what I've seen online, the Dutch side seems much more commercialized and tourist trappy, while the French side seems more raw, authentic and nature oriented.
@trevnti
@trevnti 8 ай бұрын
Absolutely correct on that one. If you want to do what the cruise ships do when they port, or stay in a American style resort then the Dutch side (mainly around the airport) is your thing. Something more authentic with good food and arguable better beaches is the French side all the way.
