Thank you so much! Nice! I was tempted to paint mine pre-heresy too! But I don’t have enough red in my collection 😜 you’ll have to show me when they’re done! If you haven’t done it before I’d recommend starting with greys and build up to white for those top highlights and maybe use something like apothecary white to glaze over it all to tie it together. (apologies if you already thought of this)

Thanks so much. I haven't done it yet, I painted most of my zerks white and just layered brown to red blood splatter all over them but for kharn I want to take a lot of steps like this to make him stand out leading them. Apothecary white is such a great tool. It's like berserker bloodshade for reds. I was going to prime him in German vehicle grey, that would work yeah?

My target for this process is the Avatar Khaine. The metal version was done with Tin Bitz as the armour and red, orange and white in the fissures. I think the new one is a little more challenging, though Tin Bitz is still for the armour colour. It takes a red wash quite nicely.

Actually a pretty good job. However I will only use acrylics which means an alternative to oils for pin lining. So what would be your opinion of using medium with the colour for pin lining. Does the medium remain to thick to flow?
@AcrylicSpillis
@AcrylicSpillis 17 күн бұрын
Thank you ☺️ You definitely can do it with using extra medium and acrylics. It just won’t flow as well so it’ll take a bit longer because you don’t want to flood the area with paint. And it might take a couple of passes to get the desired coverage 👍🏼

How many coats of base colour would you usually do? And then how many coats of each highlight colour just one or multiple? Would also like to know how much do you thin your paints down for base and highlight steps as I'm struggling quite a lot with paint consistency.
@AcrylicSpillis
@AcrylicSpillis 3 ай бұрын
To be honest, I know it’s going to be a really annoying answer but it really depends. Some colours are more opaque than others so you’ll need maybe 3 to four coats before you get that solid coverage (yellows being a prime example). But then some colours have really good coverage so you might only need 1 maybe 2 coats. When it comes to layering, it also depends on colours you’re using to be honest. But a rule of thumb I like to go by is that each step where you’re moving up in value your paint should be a little thinner. Because you want the previous layer to still show through ( again very much dependant on what you’re painting). Ok, so I personally never put paint on a model straight out of the bottle because you ultimately want a smooth finish. But if I’m base coating I’ll put say one drop of paint on my pallet and then dip the tip of my brush into water and then add that to the paint. Once that’s mixed in clean your brush and get rid of any excess water, then go back to the colour and test it with a brushstroke on the back of your thumbnail. If it’s still solid and you can’t see your nail then it’s all good. Now when you want to start adding your layers you apply the same principle but with a little more water added and you’ll start to see more of your nail showing through. You’ll eventually get to a point where you hardly see any pigment and it’ll mainly be your nail showing through. Now this is now a glaze consistency and that’s where you want to transition colours into each other but it’ll take numerous passes in order for the colour to change ( always allow the paint to dry before applying another glaze layer). Sorry for the long message, I hope that helps? But please feel free to message if you have any more questions 😊
@Frytex
@Frytex 3 ай бұрын
@@AcrylicSpillisThank you for an information packed answer, that helps a lot. I'm aware that coverage of paint varies depending on colour, manufacturer, undercoat and so on. What I'm looking for is like a real life example of what to aim for. So let's take that dark red skin tone as an example. How many coats of base coat did you do for that coverage, did you do just one pass with every highlight colour or did you do like 2-3 passes with the last one as it's the thinnest one. If you ever gonna make a video on paint thinning or layering, please include how many coats you're doing in each step and maybe show the paint on the back of your thumb each time. Sorry if that's asking for too much 😅

The most important tip I’d say is to make sure your paints are thinned enough. And if you’re using a brush just take it slow and build outwards if you know what I mean? Now if you think the coherency is off, try and use thinned down contrast paints or regular acrylics (like a glaze consistency) to try and tie them back together 😊 I hope that helps?

GW should not be immune to criticism, but they are far from the evil corporation that people make them out to be. For the most part, the company is actually made up of people who love this hobby as much as you or me. They are the leaders in the market, and that means they set the price at the top end of the market. As far as hobbies are concerned, it's very middle of the road. I come from motorcycle racing. It makes Warhammer look like pocket change. In ten years of Warhammer I haven't come close to spending what it costs for one season of racing. You have made a lot of good points, but I can understand why people get so passionate on the other side of the discussion. It's an amazing hobby, and my life is better because of it. Just found your channel. The content is top notch. Subbed. Thanks for sharing!!!

Exactly! And I think it’s a shame that a lot of people forget that. Nice! I’ve got friends that used to be into racing too and I’ve heard how expensive it is 😂. And I think you raise a really good point because it’s all relative. Like I also keep reptiles and some invertebrates and the amount of money that costs in comparison to this hobby is also staggering. I totally agree with you in that I understand the passion on the other side of the discussion which in part could be argued why this hobby is so amazing. @@AcrylicSpillis I think that a lot of people in the hobby still have a hard time separating this hobby from video games. Because of the economy of scale and having nothing tangible. We get to share the love of Warhammer with our almost 15 year old son! The club we go to sometimes is open twice a week, they were saying they have had so many people recently, that they ran out of space, even with an overflow room out the back. Really nice video. This cleared a lot of things up for me, I was getting quite frustrated with some of the colouring. I was gifted Army Painter Speedpaints but I find they're a little too thin, even after arm-aching shaking of the bottle which I've seen people complain about with that brand. I have a question about primer since I don't see a lot of talk about it online - should I use a brighter primer like white if I'm painting something that's very bright like yellow for example? I bought ash gray primer and my colours like brighter/paler yellows are taking many many coats for the colour to stick. Thanks!
@AcrylicSpillis
@AcrylicSpillis 8 ай бұрын
Thank you so much 😊 I personally haven’t used the army painter speed paints, but most of those paint ranges will be very thin no matter how much you shake them and the coverage depends on the colour as some are way more pigmented than others. So primers do make a massive difference to be honest and if you’re painting a model primarily yellow white will help you massively as the yellow will have better coverage. But I personally don’t like using just white as I basically use black for pretty much every model. This is because I like working from the shadows out to the highlights, if you know what I mean. But, if you’re going to be using speed paints exclusively it might be worth you trying zenithal highlighting. Which involves you priming the model in black all over and then white from directly above it establishes your shadows and highlights. If you then use your speed paints over that you’ll find it easier and you’ll see better results. And if you search “slap chop” you’ll see examples of people using that technique, unfortunately I haven’t got a video on it. And just so you know, yellow is a very tricky colour to use as it normally has less coverage than a lot of colours. So, you just need to take your time and build it up gradually to get your desired coverage. I hope that helps?

@@AcrylicSpillisThat's perfect. Thank you so much for that, I'll definitely try zenithal highlighting, and I'll look into slap chop as well. Hi! I am actually working on an old WH fantasy tomb king model. I just need to finish up the touch ups and do the base then it's done! :D Next will be a pink horror I think to practice wet blending. :)@@AcrylicSpillis

Ahhh nice! I haven’t got my hands on any of the new models yet but I’ve got plenty of Oldhammer from my childhood that is begging to be rescued. The horrors look really fun to paint, like squigs! Nice, it’s great to practice new techniques or refine existing ones! I find most models benefit from various techniques depending on the sculpt.

This is awesome. Definitely agree with your fur/hair colour choice in the end. That red really ups the chaos. Glad I stumbled on you. Subbed instantly.

Thank you, it really means a lot ☺️ Yeh, I felt the blonde hair really didn’t work with the skin tone. But we live and we learn!

@@AcrylicSpillis I would recommend the Glorfindel Lord of the West or Elrond Master of Rivendell miniatures. The sculpts are gorgeous
