Hi I'm from Leicester in the UK, great video I've just subscribed and am catching up on your earlier videos and really enjoying them. I think your Sedum is probably growing in too rich soil for it, so it's grown lush hence the top heavy flowers. Their basically a succulent. As you say you can do a 'Chelsea' chop on them at the end of May to make them grow sturdier.
@GardenNotes12 сағат бұрын
Welcome aboard! Thanks for your comments. Yes, the soil around is fairly new, added by the city when they removed a dead tree. I’ve heard about the Chelsea chop but have never done it myself. I suppose new flower buds will form on the cut (& shorter) stems? Look forward to learning about it next year! So glad you enjoy my videos! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

Very interesting video! I had no idea sedum grew to this size. I have some autumn joy I’ve kept in a pot for several years but it has maintained a fairly consistent size. Maybe it’s growth is regulated by being in a container, I also cut it back every winter.

I’m with you on trimming back the spent foliage, they look much better without it. I never grew these until I found one on sale 2 yrs ago. Then a friend told me about her wild ones. Of course had to get a couple 😉. They grew 10 times bigger than the non-native type. I didn’t collect seed and now I have what looks like 150,000 seedlings! They’re everywhere! 😳Fortunately they’re where they can continue to grow native and not be a problem. I will have to thin them for health, talk about free plants lol! Thank you for featuring yours!❤p.s. good idea to remove seed pods🤣

I am underwhelmed each year at my plant’s blooms; not because they aren’t pretty. They are. It’s because of the hype surrounding this shrub. I never get that “smoke” look and no longer expect it. I enjoy this shrub for the beauty of its foliage. I have had to cut mine back a bit to keep it from looking tree-like. Yours can definitely benefit from a little cut back. I’m really enjoying your videos!
@GardenNotes3 күн бұрын
Thanks for your comments. You've said it so well. That's what I am heading too - no longer expecting much of "smoke". Plan to pruning it to keep it looking like a smaller tree. My yard is half level lower than my house and always good to have some heights. It is now looking like a crazy octopus! Sound like you are pruning yours. When in the year do you do that? I have tried a few timing but it is best to learn from other with more experience. Thanks for sharing!
@dianebright81373 күн бұрын
@@GardenNotes I prune while it’s still cold out: March. I look for the tiny leaf nodes on the branches and I cut just above it. If my branch is too long and reaching outward, I look for a particular node that faces to the inner part of the shrub so that it will grow thicker and fill in the center. I like when they are fuller and more shrub-like, rather than a tree form. Mine is now just about 5 feet tall and I just enjoy keeping it around this height.
@GardenNotes3 күн бұрын
@@dianebright8137 oh 5 ft is about what I want it to be. 👍🏻👍🏻 One more question. About what height are your cuts? About 2 ft from ground or three? Thanks a lot!!
@dianebright93662 күн бұрын
@@GardenNotes The Winecraft can take a hard pruning. Yours is very pretty. It could use a solid pruning if you don’t like those octopus legs! It’s difficult to cut off the branches, but the growth afterwards is so worth it! Trim back to wherever you want to see more growth. I have pruned back to 2.5 ft from the ground and it bounces right back.

My macrophyllas' blooms are pale pink. How can I make it vivid pinks and purple?
@GardenNotes3 күн бұрын
Usually adding lime make the soil alkaline, which result in pink flowers in Hydrangea. If they are already in pale pink, I think the soil is in right alkalinity. I would suggest adding all purpose slow release fertilizer in Spring when the buds start to. It may take 2 years to see the true results. Good luck!

Yes. This step to prepare & transplant is some work. Since it has been in ground, all it needs is a trim in Spring. This past Spring, I did not get around to do that due to my travel. It is doing quite ok. Thanks for your comments!

Thank you! We are on a water restriction. Lawn springling is restricted to one hour once a week on the weekend. I hand water the flower bed early in the morning to save water. We are not on water meter yet so a flat rate for everyone! Behind of most chores due to the odd weather. The heat is going again. Cannot go out except around sunrise each day to water the flowers. I think you are in same boat too being in N America! So nice to hear from you🙏🏻🙏🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Hi may I know exactly what fertilizer did you use? My macrophyla hydrangeas look healthy, a lot of foliage but hardly any blooms. It’s been 3 years and I’m at the point of removing them if they don’t bloom next summer.
@GardenNotes5 күн бұрын
In past years, I used slow release fertilizer for acid loving plants (Hydrangea, Azalea). It has an acidified that keeps the hydrangea blooms blue.
@GardenNotes5 күн бұрын
This year, I used all purpose slow release. This has a lower Nitrogen content hence the foliage is less prominent showing off the blooms better. However, the blooms are not blue but a range from pink to purple to blue.
@GardenNotes5 күн бұрын
Unless you are in an area where the winter cold kills all flower buds, the key to having blooms next year is NOT to prune after end of August this year. Have you been cutting after August? Fertilizer helps but the key is the timing of the prune. Glad to share my experience! Thanks for your question.
