There are too many GA pilots, which are VFR only. In my view, this is due to two reasons: 1) IR rating is not helpful for most GA pilots as most GA airports are VFR only. There are no common guidelines in the EU for small uncontrolled GA airports to follow to allow Instrument Approaches and Departures. Even getting AFIS service is simply out of reach for small GA / aeroclub airports due to the certifications and connected costs. So, where there are almost no airports where you can use IR, pilots are not motivated to undergo the costly training. Suppose there is no support from EASA/CAA/ATC with guidance/rules for certification/construction of procedures, etc. In that case, there will be no motivation for small GA airstrips/airports to invest in those, and without EASA guidance/request, the CAAs/NAAs would be either too scared to allow it or not motivated for this extra work. Look at FAA - they have RNP/RNAV approaches to non-towered airports just with UNICOM, and it works reasonably well. 2) Theory exams for IR/BIR/EIR and the cost of doing the rating with very little to gain (when not going to the airlines). Limited airports, aircraft that are costly to maintain, and costs for ATC services (approach and landing charges, navigation charges). Make easy guidelines for CAAs/NAAs on how to allow IFR at uncontrolled airports, to pilots on how to operate IFR in uncontrolled airspace, and motivate CAAs/NAAs to do the certification and design of the IFR procedures for GA airports/pilots to follow. Then, there will be more IFR-rated pilots and fewer VFR-into-IMC incidents/accidents.

That's a good point about not manoeuvering at the landing site. There are a lot of variables. I remember seeing accident footage at an airport where the fabric cover of a fire extinguisher became FOD as it was sucked into the fenestron tailrotor - and that was a controlled and supposedly safe location. In fact, here it is kzbin.info/www/bejne/baPJgX2FhNCLecU

I think this is a bit backwards, the common sense solution is better training, provide a coherent EASA wide at the least standard weather briefing format for all countries at the minimum i within EU. with an easy and accessible weather briefing . Perhaps start in the right end of the problem and don´t suggest "ducktaping" your way out of it.
@together4safety301
@together4safety301 Ай бұрын
It's a tough one, in GA there is a fine balance between enough rules and too many. So it's not so easy to regulate a solution like that and how would you check every pilot used such a common approach. Ultimately it's a multifaceted solution. Training, ongoing learning and education along with useful easy tools to get the information. The other challenge is that in many accidents the weather looks fine until it suddenly isn't. Hopefully a collaborative approach can improve things.

We have helicopters all over Sacramento del Paso heights neighborhood. They spread noise pollution and anxiety across our community. I think they should spend that money on drones and more eyes on those cameras instead of individual helicopters and planes. It's a waste of money and very primitive.

I am an airline captain and in my company we do EBT for a few years now. Maybe 6 years or so. Now- 6 years later I have talked to many fellow pilots. Before EBT, every year we had two checkflight and two refreshers. We were able to prepare for each of the checkflights and also could focus on the refresher topics. Today we have EBT...which means 2 days of being checked and evaluated...twice a year and the refreshers just disappeared. Pilots have to prepare for 2 days at once and have little information how to prepare for those two days. EBT was sold with the phrase: "Less checking, more training". But in reality it has become "No training, only checking" .At least in my company so many pilots have developed anxiety and literal panic because of EBT. But noone wants to talk about it openly. But this EBT is a horrible idea and does not make flying safer. It is a hazard to the mental health of pilots.

helicopter helmets are huge and stupid looking, reason is to be wide enough to cover the ear muffs. The helicopter helmer industry has not changed in like 70 years, would be nice if they were slimmed down.

One of our pilots whilst flying an H125 hit a pocket of turbulence so severe that his helmet struck the door frame windshield post on the right side with enough force to crack his helmet. Such a blow could very well have rendered the pilot unconscious had he not been wearing the helmet. The consequences of an unconscious pilot in flight would be fatal to the four passengers on board. Since then I have used this example when asked why I wear a helmet and then I drop the tinted visor and say with a smile that it’s also a very cool pair of sunglasses. Cheers and safe flying.

Great conversation again John, great feedback from Pascal. Something I would appreciate would be your opinion about the role of Safety Departments in this new Safety “model” (SMS), and what changes in the organization are necessary to real change mindsets and make the “safety culture” a reality. How do we make Safety culture happening for real, without full commitment of all levels of organization and how this impacts the role of Safety Departments. Maybe a podcast on this would be great?

Helicopter windscreens are typically not ballistic rated so in the event of a bird strike it's not uncommon that they'll go straight through. Helicopter helmets are really expensive and not one-size-fits all so it'd be hard to justify keeping a bunch around for passengers. Bluntly, if a passenger gets smacked in the face and knocked out it isn't going to kill everyone onboard.

I really appreciate your effort to bring the concept of a learning mindset into the conversation and apply it to general aviation. The idea that safety is something that is lived on a daily basis is very important too. I have noticed that these attitudes are very important within many larger organisations, but there seems to be a critical organisational size beneath which tactical commercial decisions over-ride strategic safety considerations. Running a small ATO or DTO, some owners are under daily risk of closure. I wonder if some feel obliged to take short cuts to stay afloat. Additionally, smaller businesses may not have corporate experience of going to a college's funeral.
