Good question! The new Portal North Bridge is designed to be 50 feet above the Hackensack River to allow marine traffic to pass underneath without interrupting rail service. Building the bridge 2 feet higher isn’t necessary because the current design already meets the required clearance for river traffic.

The future Portal South Bridge Project will add two additional tracks for a total of four after both bridges are completed.
