Nice catch, I occasionally see the Housatonic working around its Northernmost point of Pittsfield, MA. They always have quite a string of cars being interchanged with CSX in town. The Housatonic ever run their own locomotives anymore or is it all the GATX lease units?
@SteelMagicCarpet3 күн бұрын
Thanks. The last time I was in New Milford there was a locomotive painted in the Housatonic scheme, but that was probably over a year ago.

@nickrodriguez8738 Please don't use the words impossible and Trump in the same sentence. I thought it was impossible for a guy to get reelected, who sent a mob to bludgeon their way through Capitol Police, so they could do #2 on the floor of the People's House. I was wrong. So yeh. Trump can stop the Gateway tunnel. He doesn't care, any more than C. Christie cared, about 200,000 people a day getting to their workplace or to conferences and stuff. -- But we might get the tunnel, if they name it TRUMP tunnel.

What's the swing bridge behind it?
@SteelMagicCarpetАй бұрын
It is the DB drawbridge. It was decommissioned in October 2002 and left in an open position for river.

Impressive progress. This project is sailing along. It is WAYYYYYYYYYY overdue. The weather this Fall has been quite cooperative. Hopefully, they can work through Winter. How are the new tunnels coming?
@SteelMagicCarpetАй бұрын
The tunnel it self is in pre-construction and engineering phases. But there is work on constructiong starting, Effective Today Wednesday, November 27, pedestrian access along the east side of Tonnelle Avenue (northbound) will be changed to accommodate the next phase of construction www.northbergen.org/_Content/pdf/2024-11-25-Tonnelle-Pedestrian-Bridge-Construction-Notice.pdf

I used to live in West Virginia, and have ridden the Cap many times both into DC and westward to Chicago. It's not as scenic as some, but it's a pretty ride. The leg that goes from Cumberland, down the Yough to Pittsburgh is especially pretty...do it in the Summer (westbound) or it'll be dark. The eastbound leg from PGH to Cumberland is really pretty in the fall...just as the sun is coming up. The section from Harper's Ferry down to DC along the Potomac is also very nice! Best of all, you get to do Ohio in the dark...so you're not missing much there.

Thanks for sharing your experiences! It sounds like you’ve had some memorable journeys on the Capital Limited. I appreciate the tips on the best times to travel for the scenic views, especially the summer westbound trip and the fall eastbound leg. And I had to chuckle at your comment about Ohio in the dark-good to know! I hope to travel back out that way at some point. I enjoyed Cumberland too, the are revitalizing the downtown area. What's gonna happen to the old right of way?
@SteelMagicCarpet3 ай бұрын
The old right of way for the Portal Bridge will be decommissioned and removed once the new North Portal Bridge is fully operational. It will still have the same capacity limitation of 24 trains per hour. This is because the new bridge is part of the existing two-track system, which is already operating at full capacity during peak hours. Essentially, the new bridge eliminates the need to swing open for passing ships, which regularly gets stuck or jammed. To truly increase capacity, a second bridge is on the drawing board, known as the Portal South Bridge. This bridge is part of a broader plan that includes a line extension. However, the Portal South Bridge is currently unfunded and remains on the drawing board.

Why not 2 feet higher?!
@SteelMagicCarpet3 ай бұрын
Good question! The new Portal North Bridge is designed to be 50 feet above the Hackensack River to allow marine traffic to pass underneath without interrupting rail service. Building the bridge 2 feet higher isn’t necessary because the current design already meets the required clearance for river traffic.
