A lot of times these videos just talk about the lord and the events, trying to get at the history. I’m still only ten minutes in, but I’m really appreciating how you’re analyzing the silence and amnesia of the Hunter

Did you really get it? Mulholland dive is a masturbation fantasy, that's why the character changed after she climaxed, because the fantasy was over. Lost Highway is about Lacan's object of desire, that's why his fantasy world crumbles in the headlights when he gets what he wishes for.
@IronShakespeare15 күн бұрын
I focused on one specific interpretation of these films, while you are focusing on another one (i.e., focusing on the sexual aspects of fantasy fulfillment, identity shifts which are indeed present). However, my interpretation pretty much focused on Los Angeles and how Lynch's exploration of identity, disillusionment, and the haunting mirroring of the city. I should have talked about Inland Empire as well, who knows, maybe I will in the future. I do agree that Lacan's objet petit a emerges through Fred's creation of an idealized, escapist version of his life, which inevitably crumbles when he faces the truth but the idea of truly "getting" films like these in some singular, definitive way is a bit of a trap, don't you think? Lynch's films are multilayered, and one interpretation doesn't invalidate another; rather, it adds dimension.
@davidagiel813015 күн бұрын
@IronShakespeare I studied film in university as my minor, I picked up cinema and fantasy. I had to to my major essay on David Lynch's Lost Highway and Lacan's object of desire was used to read the whole film from start to finish. And I got a high distinction. All of these other connections, like the forced association with the Hollywood sign to make it look like he was opposed to the city, I mean its there, but that isn't the most important take away from the movie. Understanding Lacan and the object of desire is the most important factor in understanding Lynch and Lost Highway.
@IronShakespeare15 күн бұрын
@@davidagiel8130 Lacan's theory wasn't the purpose of this video. I repeat: a video. That's slightly different from academic articles and other papers. If I wanted to talk about Lacan believe me, I could. And I already have in other videos of mine. Saying that one aspect is more important than the other is a bit confusing to me. Are all the articles written on Lynch just about psychoanalysis then?

Will comment more when I finish the video tomorrow...this is more just a random question or curiosity unrelated to Fear and Hunger but related to the video...but where did Freud come to such an unsubstantiated conclusion that the Jews killed Moses? Where did he get this weird revisionist idea that they killed the "Egyptian Moses" and replaced him with a new "Jewish Moses"? All we have concerning Moses is in Scripture, and in Scripture he was not killed by a mob, he simply gave out before he reached the Promised Land. I've never been able to find where Freud got this. I think it was just a weird theory he made up while revved up on cocaine. I've found portions of the book where he talks about this event as fact but with no textual evidence to back his claim up. Figured you would be good to ask since you seem educated in the subject and I cannot find anything online.
@IronShakespeare5 ай бұрын
Many people will suggest that his idea, which he presented as factual, came from his very complex relationship with Judaism.(complex might be a too vague word here, in fact he hated Judaism). What he is doing when asserting that Moses was in fact a priest of Akhenaten and the the Jews rebelled against him and eventually murdered him is, in my opinion, what he wished to happen. I've found texts which assert that Freud admits to have picked up this idea from a 1922 text by German theologists Ernst Sellin. Like many others before him, through his dislike of religion and direct opposition of it, what Freud did was to reduce human behavior to biological urges and then, later in life and career dabble in spirituality for some reason. I am not necessarily a scholar or a follower of Freud, I believe that being a "fan" of any of these guys could prove to be quite problematic since all that we are doing here is research and presenting stuff to be factual truths, especially when we are talking about human psyche, psychoanalysis etc could be problematic in my opinion. However, in order to pain a clearer picture of the analysis of not only this video game but cultural trauma and cultural studies as well, it is important to mention this guy from time to time. I hope you enjoyed the video, though and found my "explanation" to be helpful, keep in mind that this is what I personally believe about the origin story of his idea. Anyway, thank you for your comment and have a great rest of the week!
@dunningdunning47115 ай бұрын
If it helps, Freud gave the draft of "Moses and Monotheism" a subtitle: "A Historical Novel" - this suggests Freud is aware he is speculating wildly, but that the book is an exercise in applying psychoanalysis to subject matter outside the domain of pure psychology. No idea why he dropped the subtitle, though: he either stopped viewing it as a fiction, or thought its fictional dimensions would be obvious to readers. I'm still learning about Freud myself, so don't have any answers. But I think this tidbit of information helps reframe the question of Freud's revisionism.

I have to say I greatly enjoyed the video, even though I don't even know this game. There is a lot of great stuff here. If I could give a few criticisms, though, I think the video is a little bit overwhelming with psychoanalytic jargon. Now, I am one of the few people who understand quite a bit of that stuff, but even I don't dare to touch Lacanian writing. I think everybody else needs some sort of introductory chapter on psychoanalytic/psychodynamic knowledge and how to categorize it. Some words on the problems of psychoanalytical thinking from a scientific perspective would also be appreciated (all of this, of course, only applies if making these videos digestible for an audience is a goal of yours. If it is instead a personal therapeutic thing this is of course totally fine). I might also recommend that you leave out descriptions like "at the heart of Fear and Hunger lies a 'profound' exploration of trauma." The word 'profound' seems to insist something is 'profound.' Rather, the viewer should find out through watching the video and listening to the connections you make that it is profound.
@IronShakespeare5 ай бұрын
Thank you for watching and for your thoughtful feedback. The primary aim of this video wasn't to provide an in-depth explanation of psychoanalytic theory, as there are already plenty of resources available for that. Instead, this video served as a personal outlet for me, creating a sort of bridge between therapy and informative content. I needed to talk about this game and share my thoughts to get it out of my system, basically. And I do agree with you regarding the "profound" I have a tendency to do that, I'd rather work on letting the content speak for itself. Again, thank you!

Akira is most overated thing ever.
@IronShakespeare8 ай бұрын
And what do you want me to do about it?
@LethalBubbles8 ай бұрын
There's nothing more post-modern than a bubble economy, I guess. Akira was made right at the summit of that economy, during the late 80s. It looked down to see the lost decade in it's near future. They lost the war, then they changed in accordance to the victor's ambitions. Much of the "post modernism" is simply the dialectic of coping with the colonization. You have the ambition of integrating with the world, which is actually generating the new identity along with the economy. You also have a reactionary force that's stuck on the old identity and coping with the war, and a middle ground that's stuck trying to rectify the other identities as much as escaping from them in consumerism. Some elements of Akira background such as the Olympics and War War III do seem make a lot of sense under the post modern framing.
@IronShakespeare8 ай бұрын
I don't know if I mentioned this in the video but Lyotard defines postmodernism as “that which, in the modern, puts forward the unpresentable in presentation itself; that which denies itself.” Lyotard argues that there was a strong emphasis on rationality, progress, and the belief that knowledge and truth could be universally established and presented objectively. However, in the postmodern condition, Lyotard suggests that there is a shift away from this notion. The “unpresentable” refers to elements that resist or defy straightforward representation, categorization, or explanation within the framework of traditional modernist thinking. These elements challenge the established norms, values, and narratives that seek to provide a unified and coherent account of reality. In this light, Akira challenges conventional notions of rationality, progress, and the unpresentable, and it uses fragmented and ambiguous storytelling techniques to convey its ideas about the human condition and the nature of reality. It also blurs the boundaries between different genres, employing elements of science fiction, horror, and even Westerns to create a unique blend of styles and tones. Sure, a typical trope of postmodernism is that everything has a political value attached to it, however I believe that that we can very much so identify a certain degree of of separation between a political viewpoint and the actual literary practices (you have blending of genres, visual symbols that that convey deeper meanings beyond the purely political and ideological and so forth). And even at a face value, the medium of comic books, or manga in this case, is inherently postmodernist due to its blending of literary and artistic elements (The combination of illustration, characterization, narration, and storytelling techniques). Postmodern ideologies, through their emphasis on deconstruction, fragmentation, and multiple perspectives, challenge fixed notions of identity and provide space for alternative narratives and diverse subjectivities. I really forgot and I am too lazy to look back at the video, but I hope I mentioned pastiche as well ( and this is in relation to Japanese history and it is both relevant in the manga as well as the animated film adaptation). All in all, I agree with you and I am really glad you started a conversation about this topic.
