I am not sure I had heard that a locomotive from Griffith Park in California went back Thier a steam engine .is that correct
@HawaiianRailway8 күн бұрын
I contacted HRS Historian Jeff Livingstone for the complete story. "Travel Town (Griffith Park) came into possession of No. 85 in the early 50's after the OR&L (Oahu Railway and Land) ceased main line operations. Travel Town operated No. 85 for about 10 years from the early 50's to the early 60"s. Travel Town still has OR&L Coach 1, Combine 36 and Caboose C-1 in their collection. Around 1993 the LK&P (Lahaina, Kaanapali & Pacific ) traded Travel Town a RS-12 Baldwin diesel and two sleeping cars for No. 85, Oahu Sugar No. 5 and a cane car. The HRS obtained No. 85 from the LK&P 14 years ago. It is currently stabilized and on our list for cosmetic restoration. In addition to pulling excursion trains in Griffith Park No. 85 appeared in the "Casey Jones" TV series 1957-58 and a few other movies and TV shows.

Coming from a Class-1 railroad maintenance of way employee, I would love to volunteer my time.
@HawaiianRailway8 күн бұрын
The Society is always looking for volunteers. Give the office a call (808) 681-5461. The MOW crew is always looking for workers. As you know it is hard physical labor but contributing to the preservation of an historic railroad is it's own reward. Generally the go out Saturday mornings.

I was hoping someday the Hawaiian Railway Society would go east as far as Waipahu or West Loch.
@HawaiianRailway9 күн бұрын
The right of way still exists as far east as Fort Weaver Road and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. A bike path runs next to the track within the right of way. The track and road bed are in pretty rough shape. The line maintenance cars can run on it to assess and provide basic maintenance, but the locomotives and excursion cars are too heavy given the current state of the track. Someday perhaps.

Model railroading is an expensive hobby, I was well over $4000 into it from 1000 ft of flex tracks, turnouts, nearly 500 rail cars, 12-15 modern GE and EMD diesel locomotives, DCC controllers, lighting, powered switches, lighted signals etc, I ended up selling some of it because I just did have the time to deal with it as I work for a Class-1 railroad.

My whole life in Hawaii was spent next to a railroad track in Kalihi. My bedroom was just 15 feet from the tracks and in those days, the engines were steam engines. I left Hawaii in 1953.

These steam engines passed by my house in Kalihi Kai many a times. The noise never woke me up despite being only 20 feet from the tracks. Circa 1940's.

When contacted by the HRS there was no question about including this video on their YT site. I hope that viewers will find it informative. Sadly many of those seen in this video are no longer with us, but their involvement and dedication to the society are not forgotten.

I was born and raised in Hawaii but I reside in WA and I work for a Class-1 railway in the MOW track department, I wouldn't mind offering my time to help with the track maintenance, there's also a Samoan from Mililani who works in the same department but he's working with a different local section.
