I have visited Oxford and surrounding areas many times and will be there again for two weeks in September 2024. However I only discovered The Old Bookbinders Ale House in Jericho last year. What a wonderful pub. Best regards ,,,, John.

This brings back memories. I was the assistant manageress here in the 1980's, very spooky experiences whilst I lived there. George the landlord from centuries before would often move things about. All the staff talked about George. 😊😊😊👻👻👻 I also got to serve John Thaw when they were filming Morse

Thank you Rob for another interesting video of the less well known aspects of Oxford. I knew of one or two of the tunnels mentioned, but others are a complete surprise. Regarding Cuckoo Lane and it`s preservation, would that be due to any connection with it being an historic Public Rights of Way ?? In various parts of the country, housing developers have been required to preserve these public footpaths, to much annoyance on their part, as they are a crucial connection to the countries heritage - and thank goodness too :) Thank you !!!!!

Interesting response, thanks. I wonder if the owner of Heading House, Wootten-Wootten, tried to have the right of way removed, was refused and therefore buried it??
@MrTorleon
@MrTorleon 11 ай бұрын
That is a possibility.During the housing boom immediately following WW2, many Public Footpaths were ignored and built over. I know of one, in the Wirral Peninsula where a developer planned to build a housing estate. However, the pathway, known by the local community as' The Monks Path ' brought on the developer heavy historical evidence, a trackway originating at the monastery of Jarrow, and through the Wirral, connecting it to the destination of Holy Isle,Anglesy, then ship to Ireland. My last visit was in the 1980`s and within the Roman grid plan of roads, there runs diagonally one road, which follows the Monks Path, on to Llandican Lane ( note the Welsh spelling ) then on to a crossing point on the River Dee !!!!!!!!!! @@RobsOxford

Sorry Rob, I forgot to mention, and thank you for filming the chapel interior - isn`t it fabulous ?? Thank you Rob - yes I do subscribe to your channel already :) I was particularly delighted at this video of Worcester College.I had enjoyed the friendship of a fellow academic of Worcester before she relocated to the U.S., and she and I walked around the stunning grounds and it`s equally stunning lake, on several occasions. I recall, vividly the wonderful pleasure when two swans, with their young cygnets came right to where we were standing, with no signs of worry or concern :) Thank you for some essential background on the college itself -always appreciated, and I look forward to further Oxford videos - top shelf every time !!!!!!

Thank you Rob, a comprehensive intro to Oxford University, and providing those essential initial questions for a person considering applying for undergraduate placement. As a retired Oxford academic, now living far away, over the years I have made every effort to answer those voiced uncertainties - " Can anyone apply ? " " Is it expensive ? " " Is it a bit exclusive, only for the well off ? " and so on. Happily, nearly all colleges now offer and provide substantial on- line information, and many SLO`s have placed informative videos on KZbin and so forth, so that all prospective students should be able to make a much more informed decision than in times past - and how fortunate they are :) Thanks once again, and well done !!

Hwæt ! means litterally "what!" in Anglo-Saxon. It's, of course, the beginning of the poeam Beowulf (Hwæt! We Geardena in geardagum...). Still, this might have been used to get ppl's attention for sure. Clearly Tolkien used it that way. Lovely.

Campion Hall is a small, Jesuit private College but is amazing and of a very high standard It's a male college but women can study there , if allowed to, but cannot live in. It's a truly wonderful, very special place. In 2008 they hosted for a special dinner for the Dalai Lama's interpreter, who is a personal friend of mine. He loved it there , as did I. Gerry Hughes (the philosopher one) and Fr Norman Tanner were marvellous back in the day.

An entertaining video but the Norrington methodology fails to consider advanced degrees, students who take those qualifications or graduate-only colleges. Perhaps a metric of students at matriculation rather than graduation would be more comprehensive.
