Thanks for this overview. For playing live, how do you get your sound out of your computer and into the room? Are you using a USB audio interface? Then from there, where? Out to the house PA? Or out to a bass amp? If out to an amp, do you try to set the amp so that it imparts minimal coloration (since you’re getting that from MainStage)? Thanks in advance.
@insidetherecordingstudio

I'd go straight from the interface to the board/PA. Treat the same as you would if you're miking a live amp into a board/PA.

Very informative! Thank you for sharing all this info. I’m intrigued by the idea of using MainStage (and/or Logic) for live shows, mainly so I can get stereo guitar sounds. But my burning question remains unanswered by your podcast… How do I get my sound out my USB audio interface (UA’s VOLT 276) into the room? I tried plugging a ¼ inch instrument cable between the audio interface’s output and my Boss Katana amp’s input, and it sounded kind of horrible. Obviously I tried to dial in a very clean, low-gain sound with no “coloration” on the amp. I’m wondering if instead of plugging into an amp, I could go straight to the board, or maybe even use a pair of powered stereo studio monitors, each mic’d independently? How do YOU get your sound out of your computer and into the room? Thanks!

Jay Bennett also played guitar on Spilt Milk. Plays the verses on Too Much, Too Little, Too Late and a little bit on Brighter Day. Made his contributions after the artwork went out to print. Bruce Kaphan from American Music Club, pedal steel and John Patitucci on upright bass both played on Russian Hill.

You guys are all into recording, so why does this podcast hurt my ears? Too much treble? Not enough bass? Need EQ? Or is this artifact from compression? What gives? I listened to the entire podcast out of interest, but nobody should have to tolerate pain that long from audio...And I grew up in two recording studios. Our recording engineer ended up as a major Nashville guy who has worked with just about everybody in Nashville and in Country music. That said, listening to this podcast was not a waste of my time.. Thank you!

Only thing we can think of is an issue between KZbin and your end point and possibly a limited connection that KZbin may have downsampled it in its transit to you. We played it back after your comment to double check and it sounds exactly as it should - not too much treble, not thin, no artifacts. We are happy that you felt the content was worth the effort.

logic has many resources, it is a good DAW, but there are still many problems, I believe that the browser manager is the worst today among all DAWs, I don't understand how it is possible that in 2024, there are still these problems, yes I tried Untagged Loop, but it almost never works, the tempo doesn't always sync, and if you're playing a loop in the arranger, and you try to search for something in tempo, it's slow, apple has now created "Logic For Ipad" and it seems like you're seeing a Very nice browser, let's hope they also port it to Desktop, what's certain is that if they continue like this I think I'll move on to something else...

Gold from the get go. I never really knew why everyone prefers Melodyne or combine Melodyne with AutoTune. I dont know if ya'll ever plan on doing video chats or not, or just do it for certain types of content or shows. If not I think it would be cool or innovative if ya'll turned yourself into cartoons and had some auto program that sync the lips or whatnot. Something that will just help captivate more folks. But the no video makes the content more ideal for something I put on before I go to bed or when I wake up. Like it doesnt require so much of my attention which is niche.

What needs to be said is that Jellyfish has a multi-generational worldwide cult following that far outlives the band. They have strong followings in Russia, Southern and Western Europe, The UK and Ireland, Scandinavia, South America, Asia... EVERYWHERE! Why? Because they are bloody awesome from head to toe.

Rock and Pop music knuckleheads would not recognize that their tune Bedspring Kiss (about Jimi Hendrix) on their first recording Belly Button featured the world-class Jazz bassist John Patatucci on double bass. That track was a total chef's kiss of a production. John Patatucci was the bassist in Chick Corea Elektric Band! Every self-respecting musician knows who the hell John Patatucci is in the zoo. My old roommate moved to LA to get closer to the industry. While working his day gig at Circuit City he sold a car stereo to John's wife as a Bday gift for him. She humbly said, you probably don't know who my husband is, but was delighted when he told her that he had his recordings in his record collect, and so do I. I feel lucky to have caught Chick with his Elektric Band in the early '90s here in Seattle. Every Jazz guitarist, bassist, drummer and pianist that did not have a gig was there that night--the Seattle Jazz Mafia was fully represented!

An album like Spilt Milk was better than all of those Grunge albums, says the guy from Seattle (a Brasilian Jazz musician). As an aside Kim Thayall and Mike McCready have shown up at my gigs over the decades quite by happenstance. I like those guys more than I care for their music.

Not sure if you guys have talked about Andy Wallace and how he just mostly uses SSL and very little outboard processing but is this because awesome tracking is going on or both, the SSL is just that awesome and people don't need to fall into the hype of needing lots of stuff to mix a dope colorful track ? There is a lot of smoke a mirrors going on with plugin pushers and others trying to make a sale ,so its kind of hard for kids to really know what's up. Maybe you guys can do a Mix Myths Busters series and tell us what all is going on behind the wizard curtain of all this hype and misinformation.

quick question? the new mbox has loop in/out that can actually use hardware as an insert, looped through as an insert in Protools. Is there anyway i can loop my distressor as an insert utilizing the symphony desktop or would i have to get the new mbox to do that?
@insidetherecordingstudio
@insidetherecordingstudio Жыл бұрын
There is a way, but it is dependent upon how you have your Symphony desktop set up. Also, what is about to be explained is not exactly the most ideal method. We're making the assumption that you're running your monitors off the L&R outs. We're also assuming you want this continually plugged into the situation. You will need to route audio that you want to send to the Distressor via the Symphony Desktop's rear Headphone out. You would then need an ⅛" to ¼" converter to get from the headphone out to the input of the Distressor. Then run the output of the Distressor to the input of your choice (1 or 2) on the Symphony Desktop. You would need to deal with the audio routing via the Pro-Tools hardware routing functionality. Additionally you will want to make sure you are gain staging the audio out properly for the Distressor. It's not exactly the most ideal means of looping it in, but it would work. The larger issue is that the Symphony Desktop is hampered by the limited analog Ins/Outs at it's disposal.

Jellyfish’s albums were recorded in analog and mixed to analog tape, MIDI was as technical as it got until it was sent off to be digitally mastered, from analog tape. No computer editing or recording was used, except what could’ve happened at the mastering process of the analog stereo mix. The erasing of that guitar solo happened the old fashioned way, of either someone didn’t label it correctly on the track sheet or the wrong track was armed and erased over until they noticed that no solo was playing and in a panic, hit stop! When Jellyfish released the instrumental versions of Bellybutton & Spilt Milk, together on 1 CD for Record Store Day a few years back, titled Jellyfish “Stack-A-Tracks”(a nod to The Beach Boys StackOtracks instrumental album) they specifically talk about those instrumental mixes were made contemporaneously as the Master Mixes of the Albums on analog tape, and had been stored until now. They specifically notated all of this in relation to the instrumental mixes, that in preparation for that release, they didn’t do any digital editing, they just transferred those mixes from the analog tape to digital, just to be mastered.

Jellyfish-Spilt Milk took a lot of influence from Beach Boys-Smile, you really notice it, listening to the instrumental version of the album, with the sound of the Bass and the use of Banjo on Spilt Milk, not too mention the mostly accapella intro of Hush, is very similar to “Our Prayer”. Fun fact, during their pre show music played through front house, Jellyfish actually played Beach Boys Smile tracks, on their Spilt Milk tour, which were only available on Bootleg at the time.
