Your EQ-ing could sound more convincing with less steep curves on both sides. If you want to change the tone this much, why not use a condenser? I really like the warmth of the ribbons and do not EQ them too much. Thanks for the review!

I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest that the "noise reduction" of the machine was likely designed into the repro circuitry in the form of a low pass filter. The machine Matt (Techmoan) used would still have imposed limitations on the source material but likely would have yielded more top end than the handheld unit employed here. Interesting experiment nonetheless, thanks for sharing.

Panasonic made a 10 incher (CF-J10) that was an absolute chonker, but still on Netbook size. The funny thing is that they slapped the same 35w Sandy Bridge that full sized laptops were running. I cannot imagine the thermals and abysmal battery life of that thing, but boy it was overpowered.

Great video!! I love the Porta02, I have two! Use them for recording on tape and bouncing to DAW. You're absolutely right about the sig loss above 12.5k but the preamps in this machine are badass!! Crank them up with a vocal mic as hot as you can get the input gain level without clipping, use an EQ pedal or preamp with eq in lin after the mic to boost top end and bro you will get an AWESOME vocal sound with classic tape compression. Don't worry about the hiss, you can manage it on the DAW with careful mixing...

There is a predecessor called ASUS N10J where they pair a 9300M GS/G105 to an Atom N270. Come out of factory with Windows Vista/Windows XP, runs full Vista AERO, plays 1080p locally and even GTA San Andreas at 800x600 medium settings. That inspired Nvidia and they released ION afterwards. yet these ION netbooks show no competence against those model with AMD's soon-to-be-released APU(E-250/E-350 etc) and quickly faded off market at around 2013 or something. Hi, great video to show me how to access the belt. However, may I say that it is my understanding that rubbing alcohol, which is designed for medicinal use, has a small amout of oil added to it, so only pure isoprol alcohol should be used for cleaning the pulleys.

I have/use one of those models. Used to listen to TV on it; the weather still works. Good to know there are instructions on belt replacement, in case I ever need it.

agree with everything but the music comment because that music is huge right now. Also, I use multiple pdas in 2024 just fine with no problem. They aren't just a novelty, some of us actually prefer to manage our calendars with them! i use one for ebooks and mp3s too. i can't stand smartphones and their design, so its a refreshing alternative.

Does the screen has overdrive mode ? And have you measured the gtg response time of the monitor , i know the previous 2022 H models had terrbile response times of 7-8 ms on average and only fixed it with the X model . 2023 X model with the 240hz 1440p model also had these terrbile response times . Can't find any info anywhere and it's driving me nuts 😅

For a "powerhouse" of a Netbook, it's only barely above average 2011 specs. Honestly, the best use for them is as a retro gaming machine. Emulation is okayish (PSP runs extremely smoothly on an atom n455, which is pure sorcery) but it really shines with old PC games. Though if you go that route, expect lots of pain and applying fixes, because those computers are just recent and basic enough to exclude features that were required in the 90s/early 00s like cdda playback or even Glide support. And that's without even talking about OS issues.

These little machines are loved by users.. It is about the fun..

Excellent review brother. I think the combo of a powerful GPU vs a 1080p screen is a unique selling point of the 17H. For me higher res on a tiny 17 inch screen is beneficial mostly for productivity tasks as higher res makes things like text and UI elements look sharper. For most games I prefer getting higher fps than a sharper looking graphics. For me I only notice the sharper graphics at the beginning but once you start playing it’s all about the fps.

Can you undervolt this laptop?

Mine died from bad hinges, lasted a while and played farcry 2 and mass effect 2 tho. You had to specify programs to run in high performance mode otherwise they would only use the intel integrated gfx.

Use 99% Isopropyl alcohol, not rubbing alcohol. Rubbing alcohol is diluted eith water. It should be obvious why you don't want to use anything that is diluted with water when cleaning electronics.
