Despite being one of the best Aussie drivers of his time, John Smith had some monumental crashes during his career and sometimes its amazing to know that he lives to tell the tale. He was one of the luckiest unlucky drivers going around. I still don't know which was worse (or bigger), his crash in the Tiga sports car at Winton in 1983 or the Formula Holden crash at Phillip Island in 1990. That he walked away from either is a miracle.

Yet Smithy holds a certain distinction to this day ... in 1983 he was the last Australian driver to finish on the podium of the Australian Grand Prix, driving his Ralt RT4 to 2nd behind winner Roberto Moreno and holding off race long challenges from first Alan Jones and then Jacques Laffite.

How can young kids get involved in racing with these old guys win at all cost, do what ever it costs to win attitude, And cashed up parents reliving their childhood by pumping untold money at win at all cost. I stopped watching motorsport in Australia when private entries were forced out.

It's sort of amazing to see this. Two world champions in the grid, and yet Roberto Moreno not only wins, but he also laps the whole field, like an absolute madlad.😃

I absolutely love the telemetry but even more when you have the REAR VIEW available too. Great stuff. Not that I'm a guru racer of any sort, but on a circuit like this is there a reason why slipstream is not used on the main straight?

greg "pee wee" siddle who ran an f3 team in england and employed guys like geoff brabham and nelson had many contacts to get the big name drivers over i believe he was nelson's and roberto's manager at the time, or at the very least still friends from their earlier days
@robsonlaranjeiras3473

@@nelsonschumacher7956, according Moreno, "Pee Wee" worked to Nelson, but not as manager. Moreno ran because he hadn't money to drive on F1, at this time. I don't know why Nelson and Alan were there.
