Thank you for warning people about needing to plant in containers, it also bears mentioning that people will definitely want to chop those seed pods as soon as they start to see them forming. If milkweed sprouts in the lawn, butterflies may lay their eggs on them only to have the plants mowed down, might be kind of a belgian bummer. Thanks again. 🦋 I'm struggling a demoralized with this common milkweed thing, it's a pain in the back (side).

Yes, definitely chop those seed pods before they release their seeds! Glad to see you at least thing about the butterflies. Butterfly Weed is one that doesn't spread much at all....in my limited experience.

@@MidwestGardener I really like the orange milkweed, the swamp milkweed gives me so many monarch eggs. I love helping out the monarchs every year...but that common milkweed is going into containers this year or else (it smells sooo good though!). I gotta find someway to make transplanting common milkweed easier on my poor aching back.

I grew out 2 plants of the next gen Corbello for a winter grow room back-cross (F4s) to JN. I kept the strongest one of the two and dang if it didn't revert back to green! So, a Winter season cross goes bust. Will likely do the cross this Spring. All to expand on you speaking of hoping they'll stay consistent (not changing) until finished in the comments. Certainly pays to grow out a few to select from. I guess they call it unfinished for a reason, eh?
@MidwestGardener
@MidwestGardener Күн бұрын
You are right, it is always a good idea to grow out a few to select from. My problem is that I don't have room to grow out very many and still work with so many crosses. To do justice to any project, I would like to grow out a couple of dozen. I usually end up growing just 3 or 4 at most. I get lucky sometimes, and not so lucky other times. Weird that the Corbello reverted back to green. Hope the taste stays good you, and you can get that back cross made. Planting time will be here before we know it.

Interesting, I've seen mortgage lifter at the garden center often, but I didn't know it was a ridged/beefsteak shaped tomato. I assumed it was a more perfect round tomato. Will have to give it a try. Currently I have 4 plants, Sweet 100, Early Girl, Brandywine Pink and Russian Red. I mainly have Early Girl as a backup because if everything gets infected Early Girl will already have produced lots of tomato's because it fruits so fast.

Your plant looks nice and bushy. I am growing the fish pepper and black pearl. Somehow the fish pepper turn out much bigger than the black pearl, 2ft vs 1ft in 3 months. Both were planted on same day. Are black pearl supposed to be smaller?
@MidwestGardener
@MidwestGardener 4 күн бұрын
There shouldn't be a huge difference in height between the two. It's been a while since I grew each of them, but if I remember right, the fish usually topped out at about 2 feet for me, and the black pearl was maybe close to 2 feet. The black pearl grew straight up with out bushing out much.

Black Krim is my top tomato, too, and it does pretty well most years here in Central KY, whereas I have real trouble with other heirlooms sometimes; it tastes best in my opinion when there is still a hint of green on the shoulders, but others might like it better a bit riper. The best tomato I have ever tasted, however, was actually a volunteer Brandywine that came up on its own (a BW was there the year before and dropped a damaged tomato). The parent was not impressive at all in terms of production the previous year, so I didn't put any effort into the volunteer. In terms of production, the volunteer was about equal to the previous gen, but I got two excellent, large tomatoes from it with very little care from me. Those were hands-down the best I have ever tasted, but I have not been able to replicate the magic :(, and production wise, there are a lot more productive tomatoes that still taste great, just not quite as good. I bought seeds for a hybrid called Pink Girl one time, and it was a very good tomato for me with excellent production and taste, but I couldn't find the seeds for a while. Rutgers is not bad either, and good for just about everything. The best cheap thrill tomato for me has been 4th of July, which produces very heavily and tastes good, plus it can be really early -- the size is too small for a real slicer, but it quarters up very easily for eating alone or putting in a salad. Anyway, I like all tomatoes in a good year, but those are my five choices that come to mind as standing out.
@MidwestGardener
@MidwestGardener 7 күн бұрын
Thanks for sharing your top five! It’s amazing how the volunteer Brandywine tomato came about, and that it was even better than the parent plant. It's to bad there isn't a perfect tomato out there that tastes great and does great every single year. It's fun to keep searching though.

This is our second year of using wood chips. Observation #1, weeds come out so much easier!! I wasn't sure if I needed to add chips every fall... So I skipped it, and will let you know the outcome this spring! I do know that I had more weeding than I thought- half of which was Bermuda grass, but I anticipate I'll be adding more chips and that will be solved. It is much preferred to any traditional gardening method! Thank you Paul Gautschi and Creator, for team teaching us all!

Happy new year. My January garden update is: my seeds are in the fridge and the garden is empty. We're actually having a mild winter here in Northern BC, it has not really got properly cold yet, and we've only had 2 big snow dumps, both of which have totally melted. Now it's mossy and soggy, like I'm in Vancouver. Hopefully the plants (and animals/insects) that need a deep freeze will be okay, and it won't be a strange year like the past one was. They are messing with the weather to generate climate change taxes and fear. This is causing havoc for farmers and gardeners across North America. We have not had a normal weather year in BC for more than 10 years - it's always either severe cold, floods, wildfires, June frosts, February heat waves, and so on. Hoping for a better 2025! Best of luck to you.
