The original version in the movie was Anton Karas playing solo but this version with additional instruments was released as a single and was the biggest hit on the 1950 Cash Box 100 staying number 1 for 11 weeks. While the original is more haunting and perfect for the movie, this version which I have over-dubbed onto an old video performance has wider appeal while still showcasing Anton Karas' zither genius in both composition and performance. Karas was only discovered by chance when the director of the film Carol Reed and members of the cast happened to hear him play in a Vienna wine Tavern. Reed was searching for music to go with the film and offered him to compose and record the soundtrack. Pure serendipity!
