Schoenberg did in music what the communists did in politics. In an effort to "liberate" all twelve tones and make them equal, he created serialism, a new, totalitarian tyranny that was much worse than the old one and that put every note in chains.

My Dad used to sing with the Wichita Symphony Orchestra Chorus and they were working on the Requiem when I was about 10. It was the chorus’s first rehearsal with the full orchestra. The sopranos were seated right behind the percussion section and the bass drum. Everything was going well until the point where the bass drum comes in and it scared the living daylights out of this poor soprano. She screamed and yelled “OH G.OD”, and her music went everywhere. The conductor was really strict about rehearsals and all of the musicians were wondering what he would do. He just stood there for a few seconds with his eyes closed tightly and then he had to walk off stage to not go to pieces in front of the musicians. He could be heard howling with laughter from backstage, and he was still trying to keep a straight face when he came back out on stage. It was pandemonium for about 5-10 minutes before everyone calmed down and they were able to proceed with the rehearsal. That happened way back in the 1980’s when Michael Palmer was the conductor…
