I already offended a Ukranian gal by referring to her as a woman, but she took it in her stride and was and is a very pleasant person. I will say that the area of my U.S. state where I live, has a large Russian and Ukranian population, so I've learned some spoken Russian. What my Russian friends tell me is (and this may not be so, just the opinion I get) is that women still looking good for their age, whatever that means :)) prefer to be called devochka, for reasona ah, a bit dicey, I won't elaborate on, LOL. A russian family living on my street, nice people say "you can't go wrong with girl" but you can go wrong with woman.

"How can you go from Александр to Саша???" Quite easy to explain. "Alexander" is quite a long name, and naturally asks to be shortened. )) Either last part disappears -- then it will be "Alex" or the like; or first part disappears -- so "Xander" or "Sander". In Russian, first was something like "Сандр" -- but this "ндр" is hard to pronounce, so reduced to "ш".
