I love that at 2:12 if you look at their feet, it’s obvious shatner did NOT practice his choreography

One thing I'll never understand is why Star Trek was so popular, it's not really a good show

Yea he over acted frequently and to some, he was a bit of a prick too.... But he's a thousand years old and the only living opening cast member. Let's celebrate him while we can ! 🎉 😊

The first syllable is Shat for a reason. He's clearly never heard the advice, "Never let them catch you acting."

Just want to make this comment because I’ve seen a lot of people make the claim that Shatner is a bad actor. He’s not, he just implements a different acting style that is not as commonly seen by modern audiences. In alot of films and tv shows that were released prior to the 70s, you’ll notice a lot of actors who seem like their acting is “over the top.” Most acting before the advent of television was theatre, and theatre actors need to project and exaggerate their voices and movements in order to reach the entire audience. So this was basically most common acting style for most of western theatre for centuries, because prior to tv the only way you’re going to experience “shows” is by going to see a play. Makes sense there’d be a lot of actors still doing that at this point. It wasn’t until the 70s that the majority of acting became more naturalistic.

He only (over) acted this way in Star Trek because Roddenberry told him to act this way. NBC executives told Roddenberry that Jeffery Hunter (Captain Pike) in the pilot show was too "boring". The problem for Shatner then became he was expected to portray Captain Kirk like this all the time. If you watch any of Shatners prior to Star Trek movie and TV appearances, he was much more "normal" in his acting.

If you look at lead TV actors 1966-68 he was head and shoulders above most of them…..watch his performance in Judgement in Nuremberg acting along side Spencer Tracy….he held his own

If his convulsive acting and nearly Christopher Walkenesque script delivery doesn't impress, then the fact that he's fluent in 2 obscure, yet still popular enough to be recognized, made up, bullsh*t languages. Those are Klingon and Esperanto. He's also known not only for being the only person to ever defeat the Kobayashi Maru, but also the only male of any species, to ever "out pheromone" and thus control an Orion female bending her to his will using just his 🍆 Captain out 😉👽🖖

Turns out Shatner was precisely the right man for the job. Much credit to Gene Roddenberry: Trying to oversell a prime time network audience is a big gamble especially considering such heavy sci/fi “fantastical” subject matter.

I know whoever posted this was trying to be funny but I personally think Shatner was a damn good actor.I found him believable as a starship captain. He projected strength and some gravitas. He was very good as a young actor in several tv shows ,especially the Twilight Zone. Now hes old and senile but quite a career.

Apparently, very few of these comments are from people who actually have watched Shatner in something other than Star Trek. Yes, he worked on the stage, that is correct. He was Christopher Plummer's understudy (there's a guy who can go large....but also small.) The character of Kirk was supposed to be larger than life with bounding energy (another reason why Hunter didn't get the job, not that he wanted it) and heroic, and when I was watching it in the 60s, it seemed just right. (Well, except for Turnabout Intruder...even then, I drew a line!) He was also giving us a contrast to Spock. But you should watch his work in the television dramas of the 50s and early 60s. He underplays in most. He plays the character. In the pilot for "Alexander the Great," which we were mercifully spared, however, he was really over the top there. But in "The Intruder," a film about racism he did before ST, he is cunning and sly. Not to mention his work on "Judgment at Nuremberg." The man had a range, and that's why he appears in so many works pre-Star Trek. He was in demand in TV's pre-Star Trek time. Watch him on "The Big Valley." And I still marvel at his Denny Crane; people say he's spoofing himself, but that's not the whole story. He created a wonderful character with all sorts of wondrous dimensions and deserved his awards for that part. Acting styles change over time, too, and fixating on the more outlandish outtakes of ST doesn't capture the range he has. He can go large, he can go small, he can go subtle. You can celebrate and poke fun at his going large, but see the whole picture. Not just funny clips. He's had some career. (I have to say that he looks better at 90, too, than he did at 65-70 in "The Deadly Years." )
