About three weeks ago, I received a text message from Bank of America asking me to verify a payment transaction using my BOA credit card. I suspected that it was an attempt to manipulate me into revealing personal information, so I called the toll-free number on the back of my card. I was at home at the time. The BOA agent confirmed that the text message was legitimate, and that someone had attempted to use my charge card account to pay $52 to Chick Fil A, and then $2,100 to Lowe's a few minutes later. In short, BOA declined the two charges, froze my account and sent new cards with a new account number the next day. The cards arrived about three business days later. It was a sterling performance by BOA, but typical. 👏 They have this card fraud stuff covered! When you get new charge cards or credit cards in the mail, verify receipt without delay by calling the toll-free number. It may well prevent a fraud attempt against your account. The card issuer really can serve you better by knowing that your cards have arrived safely and have not been stolen in the mail.

I was wondering, do the banks file criminal charges if and when these thieves are caught?

Wow this video is great - super in depth and great for those who want a more in depth understanding of credit card fraud. I've become kinda a fraud nerd recently as my wife and I were victims not too long ago. I didn't know enough about it and in hindsight was vulnerable. I did a ton of research through videos, blogs, etc. and found some great information. One site, Upgraded Points, had an awesome post on how fraud happens, how to prevent it, etc. all in a ton of depth. It's a great resource for anyone out there looking for a beginners guide. In any case, we ended up getting a Chase travel card because of their suggestion on how great Chase's fraud prevention and policies are. We are so glad we did!
