I'm a first year electrical engineering student and I'm also making my own farming/combat game like rune factory, which is a fantasy harvest moon. Most people don't know what harvest moon is and some even call it stardew valley knockoff and it's funny because stardew valley is actually inspired by harvest moon. anyways, goodluck to you and I'm excited to see more devlogs in the future

I use GDScript since it's specifically designed for the engine, whereas C# is additional support. I haven't tried C# so I can't make a recommendation between these two, but I'm guessing GDScript is better integrated / has less bugs with the engine, and you might find more tutorials that use GDScript. It’s always amazing how much you progress on each video. I can see how much you’ve learn. I guess that common zones and towns should always be non editable since there are the core parts of the game so making the whole plaza still should be fine. I don’t see why let the users edit those zones that are so important for the game and the npcs

Thanks! I think many players like decorating not just their farm or house, but also common areas like the town. That's why I try to give as much freedom as I can on customizations.

The drawing part reminds me of the pleasure from building lego🤣And the animating fountain part is amazing...the moment the splashes are added the fountain is suddenly "alive"

Wow, I'm super amazed! So much in such a short time. I've wanted to make a farming sim too with similar feel, and stated messing around in Gadot for about a week now after already making tile maps and sprites, but it seems I'm the opposite of you. I'm way better with art than coding and I can't get my animations work with the scripts and ideas I have. Are you considering getting an artist on your team to help smooth the process, or are you set on being on the solo journey?

im very impressed, i think you have done amazingly. i have been trying to recreate something like this for the past 4 days and i cannot seem to get anywhere close; i can make the tiles changeable with tools (grass->soil, plant seeds and grow, etc) but i cant seem to get the animation to work with it. i either have the animation but it leads to nothing or i have the actual farming activity but with no animations. how have you managed both? was it a difficult process for you to figure out?

Thanks! Tool interaction is not straightforward to implement. The way I did it is 1) play the tool animation (e.g. side swing / vertical swing, etc.) in an animation player 2) when the animation reaches the frame where I want the actual action to happen, call a "use tool" function that handles the action depending on the current tool (e.g. update tiles / interact with objects). You can call functions during an animation by using the call method track. Because there's a gap between the player input and when the actual action happens, you'll need to make sure the player cannot do other actions during the tool animation (e.g. item cannot be switched from the hotbar, player cannot walk around, etc.). Hope that answers your question :)

I am curious as to what your goal of the game's scope is. It sounds like it's going to be rather big, at least by what you have said so far. Are you not concerned about it collapsing down on you? In my experience you either A) need to build huge frameworks that work robust enough and can scale, or B) work quick and dirty in expense of collecting technical debt. The former taking a huge time and the latter just resulting in inevitable refactors.

The game will have a large scope, probably similar to Stardew Valley, so I'm really careful about how I build the project. Right now I'm basically doing the option A that you mentioned - building a robust framework, which is why I haven't added much content to the game yet (1 crop, 2 skills, 2 enemies, a few items, etc.). But the framework that I've built makes it easy to add content later without much additional coding. Code maintainability is super important in a large-scale project like this one, and I think in the long run it actually saves more time than the "quick" and dirty way.

​ @LeisurelyGames I see, that makes sense when you are thinking in the long run. Though why are you trying to bring all the features into one game already? As far as I understood you don't have too much experience with making games? In that case, why don't you develop games that focus around just one or two core mechanics of your final game and bring them all together once you have finished those. So for example just making a game about farming, or a game just about combat or mining or whatever. I suppose the biggest problem is that you couldn't sell these small games as they are more something like toys and lack content/size (although I think there might be some way to monetize them). The problem with building frameworks so early is that the problem space is usually not well defined and that you have to change your backend sooner or later anyways because you simply didn't account for certain things (which you simply couldn't). Refactors just become a problem over time in any software dev field. What are your thoughts on this? Though to each there own. I am just trying to figure out how to make large games myself, stories like that of concerned ape are just wild to me.

I don't have much experience with game development, but I'm familiar with working on large scale software, so I feel comfortable building a large framework (and refactoring it if necessary). I think it'll be financially difficult to continue doing gamedev full-time if I practice with toy games, and putting them together will also require extra effort. I think building the game framework first without adding too much content makes it easier to refactor, so I'm not too worried about it.

The amount of progress from the first video it’s really amazing. One thing about the combat system would be the ability to toggle between auto aim and manual aim, like League of legends does on swarm, this would be helpful in later stages where there could be big beafy monster along side weaker enemies that way the player can decide and aim to target high priority monsters and not being subjected to relay on auto aim at all times. About the mining I think having different sized minerals would be a nice addition it could be repetitive to always have the same minerals in the same sizes, some clusters of mineral of the same or maybe multiple minerals could be fun to add, they would take longer to mine of course and they will help to enrich the environment. Wow, I didn't know there's a new swarm mode in league! I just gave it a try and I can definitely see the usefulness of manual aim. I still want the combat in my game to be simple since it's primarily a farming game, so I want to make sure that players can progress without needing manual aim, but it'll be a good option to add for players who want more control in combat. I really like your ideas on mineral varieties and will definitely work on them. Thanks for the suggestions!

Sorry I don't plan to make tutorial videos since I want to save time for development. But basically I use separate tilemap layers for the ground, the tilled tiles, and the watered tiles. When the hoe / watering can is used on a tile, I add it to the tilled / watered tilemap layer. Then when handling logic for the plants I just check the tilemap to see if a tilled / watered tile exists.

Very interesting decision. I have tried to do full time game dev for a few months but quickly realized that it's not quite for me. I felt a big preassure to work on my game as that was, by the time, "my job". I personally prefer to have game dev as a hobby, a side project, that I can work on whenever I feel like it without any preassure. I got a feeling of burn out really quickly there. What was your experience with this so far? I completely understand being too exhausted to work on anything after an 8 hour work day though. Having a part time while working on games works fairly well for me. I obviously have no idea what your circumstances are, but perhaps that might be an option? I don't feel burned out, but I do feel a lot of pressure to work on my game, like I'll get stressed if I don't put in enough hours. But it feels really fulfilling to get the game mechanics working or to finish a good looking pixel art, so overall I enjoy doing this full time. I think I'm more efficient when I can focus working on one thing, otherwise I'll always have something on the back of my mind. How do you allocate your time between your part time job and game development and switch between them?

@@LeisurelyGames Yeah that feeling of not doing enough is what got me eventually. I work really well when I have one specific topic to work on each day (or split it two half days or whatever). This really fixed this task switching problem. So if I have work to do on the job I will prioritize that. I am studying CS right now so when there are homeworks or whatever I will do those too, game dev always being lowest priority. What I found that absolutely doesn't work for me is to try to squeeze in an hour or two of game dev after my workday. It feels like a chore instead of something I do for fun. However, with the approach of allocating a topic for each day I have a lot more success. I realized I work best in bursts or sprints (a few intense days throughout the month), rather than trying to not have any zero days and only work a little bit each day. I work 60h/month on the part time (it's a work study part time thing so it's a bit more chill). Though the job made me a much better programmer and as a result also a better game developer. I am able to work way more efficient now and I feel like there is still so much more for me to learn as a programmer which will also help me develop games and I don't think I would learn all of that on my own.

That's a good point, sprints are much more productive and enjoyable than squeezing in bits each day. My programming experience from university and work definitely made it easier to do game development. It also helps me think beyond implementing features and plan for performance, maintainability, etc. Good luck with your studies and your game!

I am glad you started to pursue this dream of yours but I hope you are not totally "all in", thats a lot of pressure on your shoulders. Of course I don't know your financial situation, if you are able to maintain this lifestyle for years without problem thats great, if you don't have that stability I will encourage you to maintain a job. There are many success stories yes, but those are only the stories that are told, there are hundreds of devs like you that decided to put everything on a project that didn't succed.
