Hi, I'm a high school student and I want to know if I would be able to apply for master's degrees in Glaciology or polar science if I decide to pursue an undergraduate degree in astrophysics?
@astronomica9237
@astronomica9237 3 жыл бұрын
Hi there, it certainly is possible. I know of someone who did astrophysics in undergrad and went on to do a PhD working in geology of asteroids, so it is possible to move into a more geology/earth sciences role. It would be good if you were able to do some geology at some point, so it's worth checking if you can do it as one of your end of high-school qualifications or if the university you are looking at offers the chance to do some geology/earth sciences modules. This is because having some direct experience is better than none, but astrophysics does cover a lot of the same research techniques.

Most of the time I do, but I work to music that doesn't have singing in it because I get too easily distracted by it. So it's usually movie soundtracks and the like.

Hey! The majority of people tent to use Python for their day to day work. Those that work more with simulations use C++. Lots of physics degree programmes that I've seen usually cover at least one of these.

@astronomica9237
@astronomica9237 3 жыл бұрын
Everybody I know does programming to an extent. At the minimum people need to know how to make plots in a language like python. The majority of physics degrees will teach you the programming skills needed to do this. My work is very data heavy so I definitely do a lot more than other people.

I certainly think so. Even if you don't carry on in astrophysics after the degree, there is a lot of skills that you earn through it which can be used in other jobs. Statistics, programming, critical thinking etc. All stuff that any tech based jobs will look for in people.

A UK PhD stipend is usually pretty good to live off of so no I don't do any extra jobs. On occasion I do paid outreach work and I've also been paid to do some marking of exams but that's mostly for a little extra bonus cash rather than a necessity.

@@astronomica9237 hey one more thing, do you know if PhDs in the UK are funded for International students as well?
@astronomica9237
@astronomica9237 4 жыл бұрын
@@diveintothebeyond8426 It depends on which subject, which university and which country you are coming from unfortunately. In astronomy most universities get their funding (which is then used to pay you) from STFC which is a branch of the government. STFC funding is generally only available if you are from the UK or the EU (though brexit is making that more complicated) or if you did your undergraduate degree in the UK i think. Some universities will offer scholarships to international students but these will be limited and more competitive.

I'm already discussing with the uni getting some new kit ordered in to help with this! 3) This was my first attempt at video editing so is a bit rough around the edge. I hope to get some schedule put together and with practise improve the presentation quality. Not quite a 1 man BBC crew just yet ;)
