The human brain is extremely complex and we don't fully understand what underpins the collective experience of consciousness a person has. But I don't feel like that layer of un-illuminated mystery that science has about the brain is much different than the woo-ish ideas some people have about consciousness being rooted in concepts like souls or universal consciousness. I think that the preponderance of evidence in science weighs heavily in favour of a material origin of the conscious experience. This materialist concept of consciousness also leads me to believe that free will is also illusory, it doesn't cause me to lose a wink of sleep, I am a flesh robot experiencing existence, the good and the bad and there's nothing wrong with it.

My mom is going through this. My dad just died of Parkinsons disease and mom's first husband died of a brain tumor, so this video hit me hard. She's already had to bury both her husbands and she lost them both to long, cruel, painful diseases that robbed them even of their dignity, not just their life. Please pray for her. She's been a Christian most of her life but this past year took my dad, my parents best friend, and my daughters fiance. I know all of us die eventually and somehow I'm managing the grief better than I expected, but my poor mom is suffering horribly trying to understand how a good God could let all of this happen. My dad's greatest love was always Jesus and His Word and my mom is exhausted and grief stricken, she doesn't understand how God could let this happen to him. I don't even know if this is a Christian video but if any believers find this comment, I would be so grateful for your prayers for my mom and daughter. I want them to know they're still loved, even nothing makes sense or feels fair.

Actually, her thinking is black and white and wrong. Yes, you shouldn’t just look at your past and true to understand your problems by looking at your past. And yes, you just look at the now and how you are currently. HOWEVER, how you currently are IS partly shaped by your past (past experiences, etc.). So looking at the past and your current state is really what you need to do. There are things in the past that may affect how you react to your situations today, etc. It’s not bald or white. Both have value. Saying this or that is bad or good with these black and white labels is silly and I can’t take ppl seriously who do that.
