this is my introduction to your channel. i had never of melartin before. a good piece!
@pianodiaries54992 ай бұрын
Melartin is unfortunately not very well known outside of his native country Finland, and even there his works are not all that widely played. But the more I've played his music, the more it interests me, and the more I'm surprised to find how experimental he could be.

Beautiful. Maybe he didn't want anyone to play it? Noli me tangere = don't touch me. You find it sometimes on old organs where they've added a non-functioning stop knob just for symmetry for example. Then instead of a stop name it's marked "noli me tangere". It makes me think there's no bible connection necessarily. :)

Hi, thanks for the comment. What an interesting bit of information! In Melartin's case I am however rather leaning towards the bible quote, since he does on other occasions use latin bible quotes in his opus titles. Some of the other pieces in this opus do fit that interpretation. Since the Noli me tangere scene has been a frequent theme in art, Melartin presumably would have been aware of it, especially as he was himself a painter on the side. It's possible that he chose the title thinking of the other pieces of the opus without meaning it to suit all of them. And it's certainly possible that the name has a double meaning. I rather suspect that its use in organs is itself a subtle and cheeky nod to the bible quote. Melartin was certainly fond of mysteries, so maybe he was quite content in leaving things open to interpretation. :D

@@pianodiaries5499 Ah, that makes sense, I don't know any of these pieces, nor that he was a painter! It never occurred to me that the organ kind of noli me tangere might be a piece of good old church humour😄 I'm looking forward to discovering more of his music!

Skalmeja is called 'shawm' in English, a precursor of the oboe and predating the single reed chalumeau (the precursor of the clarinet) as well. Chalumeau is called... chalumeau in Swedish! :)
@pianodiaries5499 Жыл бұрын
Interesting, you are indeed correct. For some inexplicable reason, the book that I played from had translated this piece's name as Chalumeau, which I took at face value. Serves as a reminder to always do your research, haha! :) I will correct the title, thank you for the comment!
@HenrikBergpianorganist Жыл бұрын
@@pianodiaries5499 Well, in French chalumeau could mean both shawm and chalumeau, maybe that's why the translator got confused😅
