Hi Nicholas. It is pretty safe to drive at night. The middle of town is just very busy with a lot of small restaurants and viby bars with university students

Walked these streets from 1985 to 1990. Worcester High school and went to that big church 2 on a Sunday. My father worked at the train station for a while.

South Africa has a high crime rate but Cape Town is regarded as one of the safest cities in SA. With safe areas and lots of Police and security visibility as seen on this video. Tourists must always be aware but they do not have to be to afraid to visit
